Without moving your eyes, begin noticing what you can see at the very edges of your vision.

Shapes. Light. Movement. Color.

Don’t search for anything. Just allow your awareness to slowly widen.

Then notice:
What can you hear?
Where is your body supported?
What happens to your breathing as you take in more of the space around you?

When we’re stressed, our attention can become narrow and locked onto what feels urgent or threatening.

𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗢 𝗜 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧?

Ever snapped at someone over something small? Shut down during a conversation? Overthought a text for hours? Felt anxious, defensive or overwhelmed before you even understood why?

Sometimes, the reaction isn’t just about what’s happening in that moment.

Your nervous system is constantly taking in information and looking for signs of safety or threat. It can respond before the logical part of your brain has caught up.

That response can look like:

𝗙𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: Anger, irritation, defensiveness, needing control
𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: Anxiety, overthinking, staying busy, needing to escape
𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗭𝗘: Feeling stuck, blank or unable to respond
𝗦𝗛𝗨𝗧𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡: Withdrawing, disconnecting, feeling numb or exhausted

Often, your body gives you clues 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 the reaction gets big.

A tight jaw. Shallow breathing. Racing heart. Tension in your chest. Thoughts speeding up. A sudden urge to fix, fight, run or disappear.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀.

Nervous system regulation isn’t about forcing yourself to calm down. It’s learning to recognize what is happening in your body, understand what your nervous system might be responding to, and find the tools that help you regulate.
