When I was a sophomore in high school, I went to a friend’s house to watch WrestleMania IV, because we didn’t have cable television at home, so I couldn’t order the PPV. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to find out who would win the tournament to crown a new WWF World Champion!
Only when I got there, my friend’s dad decided he didn’t want to “pay per view,” so turned on WCW’s free counter program, Clash of the Champions, on TBS instead.
I was so disappointed, as it meant I would to wait months to rent WrestleMania on VHS, and might have to wait a full week to find out who won the title on the next Superstars of Wrestling program.
But the Clash featured one of the best matches I had ever seen that night, as the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair defended the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship vs. a young, athletic, high-flying, future icon in Sting 🦂.
The match went to a time-limit draw, as they fought back and forth for 45 minutes, while I sat on the edge of my seat watching history and becoming a huge Sting fan in the process.
Nearly 40 years later, I’m blessed to call “Old Man Sting” a client, a mentor and more importantly, a friend. Today was particularly special, as I got a chance to cover his final fan appearance in paint, as hundreds of fans waited hours to meet him and share similar stories to mine. More photos and video to come.
But I’m most excited to share what we’ve got coming up next. 🤫
