Trees are not just part of the background.
They are living protection for every breath we take.

They cool our neighborhoods, clean the air, reduce flooding, protect wildlife, and make life possible for countless species — including us.

When forests disappear, the world becomes hotter, quieter, and harder to survive in.

A tree is not “just a tree.”
It is shade during heat, shelter during storms, a home for birds and pollinators, and one of nature’s greatest gifts to life on Earth.

Protecting trees is not only about saving wildlife.
It is about protecting our future too.

I have been Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) since 2014. Earlier this week, I took another step towards becoming a TRAQ instructor at a course in WY. I am hoping to teach arborists how to assess the risk of trees like the one pictured below by fall of this year!

There’s a lot of talk comparing trees to air conditioners. It sounds great—but it’s not quite how it works.

What is true: trees absolutely cool our neighborhoods.

In our climate, a mature tree can lower surrounding temperatures by 5–10 degrees...and even more when you’re standing in the shade. That’s the part people actually feel.

Trees also “sweat” (evapotranspiration), which helps cool the air—but only when they have enough water. And right now, with watering restrictions, that matters. No water = less cooling.

Bottom line: trees are one of the best tools we have to combat heat but they only perform well if we take care of them.

If we want cooler neighborhoods, we need trees—and we need to support them. Don't forget to water your trees!
