🌎Our 50 States Unit Study Begins! 🇺🇸

This week we’re kicking off our 50 States Unit Study for History! We’re making it even more meaningful by tying it into our Earth Science unit on National Parks. 🏔️🌲🦅

We’ll be learning about each state’s geography, history, landmarks, and unique features while exploring some of the amazing National Parks found throughout our country.

I love when we can combine subjects and make learning feel like an adventure!

Making Reading Work for My Child 💙📚

One of the things we do every day during homeschool is 20 minutes of reading together. Since my son has a learning disability, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s less about how he listens and more about making sure he is comfortable, engaged, and enjoying the experience.

During our 20 minutes, he gets to choose how he wants to listen:

📖 Sit next to me and listen
🧱 Build with Legos while listening
🎨 Color while listening
👐 Play with Play-Doh
✏️ Draw or doodle
🧩 Work on a quiet activity

Giving him choices helps take some of the pressure away and allows him to focus on the story in a way that works best for him.

Homeschooling a child with a learning disability has taught me that learning doesn’t have to look one specific way. Sometimes flexibility is exactly what our kids need to be successful.

We’re not trying to make homeschool look like traditional school. We’re trying to make it work for him. 💙

A Simple Tool That Makes Our Homeschool Day Run Smoother 📚✨

I’m sharing a checklist I use with my son during our homeschool day. I created it so he can see what his day looks like ahead of time and know what to expect.

There’s something really empowering about being able to physically check off each task as it’s completed! ✅

It helps with:
Knowing what comes next
Staying on task
Building independence
Giving him a sense of accomplishment throughout the day

For my son, having the day visually laid out makes a BIG difference. Sometimes a simple checklist can turn an overwhelming day into a day that feels much more manageable.

📚✏️ School Ready! ✏️📚

One of my favorite parts of back-to-school season is getting everything organized. We spent some time setting up binders, folders, notebooks, and supplies so my son can start the year feeling confident and prepared.

For students, especially those who benefit from extra structure, having an organized system from day one can make a huge difference. When they know where everything belongs, they can spend less time searching and more time learning.
