This video is post castle nut replacement. The substandard one was replaced with a correct castle nut, the previous endplate (factory installed) was re-used and then staked. You will see that there was not much displacement from the endplate to the staking notch. Many of the aftermarket plates are being made and hardened beyond the standard USGI style. This makes staking very difficult. The size of the hammer or swing will not change that.

After removing the receiver extension on another lower which was using a substandard castle nut with poor staking, we compare the difference between the two castle nuts.

One thing that I constantly see as a failure area in assembly with AR's is the castle nut installation and torque/staking of the end plate. Whenever someone decries the "MILSPEC", I often times laugh, because many cannot meet the "MILSPEC".

According to the internet, receiver extensions and castle nuts never come loose. In my classes that I have been teaching for almost 7 years now, I see a large number that are incorrect and demonstrate it in class.

One does not need a degree in Nuclear Physics to understand why this is bad. Here is one recent video that we did in my last class in Keizer, Oregon hosted by Coat of Arms. If you are going to make a barrel that you claim is a "rifle gas system" you may want to ensure it's machined correctly and can actually accept a rifle gas tube. I am always saddened when an FFL is burned by a product and they (manufacturer) won't make it right. Not even the gas port location was consistent.

Quick body count from the last two Armorer Courses in Colorado.

1. At least 8 extractor springs were changed out.

2. 8 Carrier Keys had screws replaced and staked properly.

3. 2 Chambers were sacrificed to the 5.56 Chamber Reamer God.

4. Several receiver extensions were properly torqued after replacing substandard castle nuts.

With certain brands, the same issues continue to appear. Incorrect or non-existent torque on castle nuts, incorrect castle nuts with no staking notches. YFS screws with substandard stakings....and the list goes on.

Trade Craft Range is up and coming. Memberships are already available as well as range use. Lots of improvements are happening and rifle shooters will be able to shoot out to 1000 yards.
