Ah. It's my favorite time of year— year-end appeal season. I always look forward to seeing what messages and tactics my favorite orgs are using, and I'm especially eager to receive one in particular...the one trying to scare me into giving.

☠️ Because if I don't give, someone or something's going to die. ☠️

No joke.

Emotional appeals work...until they don't.

Push donors too far and you quickly go from "inspiring generosity" to "please stop emotionally blackmailing me."

There's a big difference between storytelling and melodrama that accidentally (but often permanently) torches donor trust.

💥 Read more why we can't cross that line:

How good fundraising builds connection—and how bad fundraising burns it in a single letter

Not all donors need the same care.
Some are 🌹 roses—high maintenance, exacting, dramatic.
Some are 🌱 peace lilies—happy with a little love now and then.
Some are 🌼 dandelions—thriving no matter what you do.

Treat them all the same, and you’ll waste time on the wrong ones while neglecting the right ones.

That’s why your “donor cultivation plan” shouldn’t look like an agricultural calendar:
☑ 4 meetings a year
☑ 7 touch points
☑ Gala table
☑ Annual report drop

It should look like a personalized care plan—one that matches their needs, not the organization’s convenience.

I was reminded of this recently… by a peace lily named Veronica. 🌱
Yes, really. And once you hear her story, you’ll see the problem (and the solution) in a whole new way.

What a Peace Lily Taught Me about Caring for Donors the Right Way

07/25/2025

Rural nonprofits have always done more with less. Now they’re being asked to do everything with nothing.

One leg of civil society—government investment—has been sawed off through legislation (👋 One Big Beautiful Bill Act), executive orders, and budget “efficiencies” that look a lot more like battle-field amputations. What’s left is a two-legged stool wobbling under pressure.

🟢 Philanthropy is stretched, proximity-biased, and increasingly expected to make up the difference.
⚪️ The private sector isn’t built to solve unprofitable problems.
🔴 The public sector is retreating—and with it, the infrastructure many communities rely on just to function.

Medicaid. SNAP. Early childhood education. Rural development. All “streamlining” into irrelevance. Meanwhile, nonprofits—many small, rural, or invisible to major donors—are left holding the bag while trying not to leave people behind. And it’s not just empty. It’s scorched.

This isn’t about messaging strategy. It’s about survival strategy. And it's time to stop pretending philanthropy can replace public investment.

And if you work in the sector—especially in a small-town org that's long on heart and short on resources—I’d love to hear: how is this showing up in your world?
