2 Ways to Prevent Mold Growth in Your Attic!
When mold develops in an attic people often assume that the cause would have to be a leak in the roof. However, the most common culprit that we find when we are called in is a LACK OF PROPER AIR FLOW in the attic. An attic needs to "breathe" with fresh air flowing continuously in order to avoid a build up of condensation which creates favorable conditions for mold growth.
Your attic needs two areas to function to provide proper airflow:
1. Air needs to be able to come in under the sheathing at the bottom of the roof.
2. Air needs to be able to flow out through the ridge vent.
If either of these two areas are not functioning properly, for example if your ridge vent has become clogged with debris, air will not flow properly and condensation will form as the warm air meets the cool and mold can begin to colonize.
Two Preventative Steps That You Can Take:
1. Ensure that air can flow in via soffit vents at the bottom of your roof. Here are some common reasons that these are not allowing proper air flow:
A. Soffit vents were installed incorrectly.
B. New soffit vents were installed over old soffit vents and do not allow air to flow through.
C. Insulation was installed that is blocking the soffit vents.
D. Birds or rodents get in and cut up the insulation and wind up blocking the vents.
2. Ensure that your ridge vent is not blocked and is allowing air to flow out.
