Hey it's Brandy Martin, Founder and President of Hues of Hospitality. If you're seeing this, you probably got an invite from me. Over 100 of you said yes, and I'm truly grateful.

Some of you may be wondering, "Brandy, I don't work in hospitality... why am I here?"

Here's why: hospitality touches everyone. It's the front desk agent who made your trip, the server who remembered your order, the event team behind the wedding or conference you loved. Behind those moments are talented BIPOC professionals who don't always see a clear path to grow, lead, or be seen.

People ask me what actually happens at Hues Hour, and I never have a good answer, because the honest one sounds too small.

Nothing happens. There's no program. No panel. No speaker.

What happens is a line cook ends up talking to a GM and neither one of them is performing. What happens is somebody who's been thinking about leaving this industry hears from three people who almost did and didn't. What happens is the person who walked in alone gets walked out to their car.

I stopped apologizing a while ago for how simple it is. That room is the whole strategy.

Friday, September 25, 5:30–8 at Sip Coffee & Cocktails in Alger Heights. Free, walk-ins welcome, free parking — which downtown is not offering anybody right now.

ArtPrize is back in Grand Rapids, Sept. 18 – Oct. 3. 🎨
ArtPrize is an international art competition and cultural event held every year in Grand Rapids. For 16 days, artists from around the world show their work in galleries, storefrontsA, parks, museums, breweries, and public spaces across downtown. Viewing is free and open to the public, and you can vote for your favorites. In 2025, ArtPrize welcomed 967,000+ visitors, generated $82.6M in economic impact, and supported 629 jobs in the region.
The art is what brings people downtown. The people who greet them, serve them, house them, and make them feel welcome are the reason they come back. That’s hospitality, and professionals of every hue are at the heart of those experiences.
