It’s The Little Things That Matter

The Wins are nice
The placements help pay the bills
The relationships are HUGE

Client as he heads out on a family vacation
Knowing he can rest because of
The quality of a recent addition to his team

That makes all the other chaos

It Appears That
The Bloom Is Off the Rose

As far as 100% WFH is concerned

While there is still - and always will be - a piece of the workforce
That desires to work remotely 100% of the time,

The numbers from 2020 vs. 2021 are
DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT

Our firm asked a very simple question in June of 2020 of 562 Accounting Professionals
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄𝙨 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙄𝙣 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠/𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚?

We provided three options to choose from...
WFH 100% of the Time
In Office 100% of the Time
A Hybrid Model

72% of responders in June of 2020 said - 100% Work From Home
13% chose a Hybrid Model

We ran the same survey in July of 2021 to 663 Accounting Professionals...
The Results???

28% gave WFH 100% of the time a THUMBS UP
52% chose a Hybrid Model

What do you attribute such a significant swing in employee mindset?

Work From Home - What A Difference A Year Makes

Roll the clock back to May/June of 2020, just three months
Into the Nationwide Lockdown over COVID-19

Many of us were wondering if we would ever
Return to anything that resembled "NORMALCY"

Would we ever go back into our offices?
Would it be safe to work in close proximity to people?

Many got a taste of what Work From Home could resemble
And many were willing to sacrifice a few shekels for an opportunity
To Work Remotely 100% of the time

If you are an employer and you are still residing in the camp of
"They'll Take A Pay Cut For the Offset of Working From Home"

You need to PUMP THE BRAKES and RETHINK YOUR STRATEGY

Our firm conducted a survey in June of 2021
And then again in July of 2021 with ONE SIMPLE QUESTION...

𝙒𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝘼 𝘾𝙪𝙩 𝙄𝙣 𝙋𝙖𝙮 𝙏𝙤 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙃𝙤𝙢𝙚 100% 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚?

72.2% of responders in 2020 said wholeheartedly YES
28% of responders in 2021 said ABSOLUTELY NOT

How is this affecting your recruiting process and strategy?

If you think these numbers are staggering,
Wait till you see tomorrow's stats and question!!

Do You Suffer From
Destination Disease?

Are you more focused on
Then & Now

That you forget to live
Here & Now?

Life has a way of
keeping us so focused on
“Tomorrow”
That we forget to live
“Today!”

When I turn 18
I can’t wait till I’m 21
When I graduate from college
When I get married
After I make my first million
After I’m married
Once I have children
When we build that house
As soon as I get that promotion
When I have my own company

Destination Disease is a
LIFE KILLER
and
JOY SUCKER

We decided years ago
As a family that we would
Never be the
“Get there at all costs”
Road-trip family

We have made some
Amazing memories turning
A 4-hour Houston road trip
Into a 6-7 hour Randolph Odyssey

If these last 17 months
Have showed all of us anything
It’s that
NOT A SINGLE ONE OF US
IS PROMISED TOMORROW

As we all prepare for a
New week and
New month
My prayer is that you
Don’t get afflicted with
Destination Disease

Enjoy the journey
Take some back roads
Literally and metaphorically

When Will Candidates Begin to Understand
Your Career Is A Business You Manage?

In a recent survey we conducted, we asked 250 CPA firm Owners,
Managers, Directors, and Partners
One Simple Question...

"If you were not actively looking to fill a role, but a recruiter
contacted you with a candidate that would upgrade the quality of your staff,
Would you at least interview the candidate?

Over 80% of the leaders responded with either YES or POSSIBLY.
Less than 20% said NO

As we ran that poll, we sent the same question phrased differently to
250 Tax & Audit Staff, Seniors, Managers, Senior Managers and Directors
in public accounting. The question was...

"If you were not actively looking for a new job, but a recruiter contacted you with a role that could leverage your experience in a possibly better environment, would you at least be open to an interview?"

Over 80% said NO - they would not entertain an interview!

Would love to hear thoughts on these numbers from my LI network.

Pregnancy Is Not A Job-Offer Death Sentence

I'm an advocate of addressing the Elephant In The Room
vs.
Ignoring the obvious issues

Last week, I spoke with a candidate who has
An amazing tax background which includes a CPA certification and
2 years of experience in a regional CPA firm

As we discussed her job search situation, she told me she had
Four first interviews but nothing past that initial discussion
My curious nature asked simply, "Why do you think that is?"

Her response shocked me..."I'm six months pregnant and it's pretty obvious."

She went on to explain that she feels like everyone is concerned she'll have the baby
In October and decide to stay home, but as a single mom, that's not an option on the table

Her plan was already laid out in respect to...
- Time off
- Short-term child care
- Long-term child care

In a nutshell, she had her ducks in a row.

She let me know she had one more interview today (7/14) on her own
But nothing else in her pipeline...and in her words,
"I'd really love to work at that firm that I'm meeting with on Wednesday."

My advice?
Address the elephant in the room (no pun or offense intended)!

I told her - as the interview winds down

𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙨...

In My Home

For years the focus on the "why" of what I did as an employee or business owner
Was more about building something and making $$$

VS

Sowing seeds of...

Strength
Courage
Hope
Work Ethic
Perseverance
Bouncing Back
Choosing to be a VICTOR vs. a VICTIM each day

I'd love to say it was a "process" of learning and growing,
But that's not the case.

It literally was a moment of clarity where I realized in January of 2008...

THEY'RE WATCHING
THEY'RE LISTENING
THEY'RE ABSORBING

"THEY" are my daughters

It's a simple concept that I've held to for years now...

Their hearts and minds are like a recorder -
Each day I choose whether it's my actions & words they see and hear and record,
OR
It's someone else's

THAT ☝☝ is a driving force in our business model today

Our desire is to show professionals in the Public Accounting space
That with the right firm
The right leadership
The right business model

There is
NO NEED TO SACRIFICE YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR LIFE
AT THE ALTAR OF YOUR JOB ANY LONGER!

If you're going to compete for Top-Tier Talent
You need to be prepared to pay Top-Tier Dollars

Many of the Large National Public Accounting firms
Are making up for the lack of raises, bonuses, and promotions
From the Pandemic Year of 2020

Some numbers we are seeing/hearing about as firms begin to roll out
their mid-year promotions and raises are truly mind-boggling!

😲15-20% pay increases over current base comp
😲15-30% bonuses

Two examples we've seen recently...
- A Tax Manager at a Top 25 National Firm going from a 2020 base of $117K to a
Senior Manager Promotion and a base of $139K...𝙥𝙡𝙪𝙨 𝙖 $24𝙆 𝘽𝙊𝙉𝙐𝙎!
- An Audit Senior at a Top 100 National Firm currently at $84K promoted to an Audit Manager with a new base of $108K...𝙥𝙡𝙪𝙨 𝙖 $16,500𝙆 𝘽𝙊𝙉𝙐𝙎!

A recent poll we conducted validated a trend
we've seen taking shape over the last few weeks and months...

While Work-Life Balance is important
While A Hybrid Work Model is important
While Benefits/PTO are important

CASH IS STILL KING!!

Dad was a mechanic
Mom was a teacher

To this day, they are still two of the hardest working people
I ever knew in life.

Dad was typically up by 4 AM.

He made breakfast
every morning for our family.

Yes, EVERY morning

He then drove 22 miles to town where his shop was and whether it was freezing cold or blistering hot in the south Texas heat, my dad never missed a day of work.

And I mean NEVER

Mom taught school all day.

She also taught
night classes at Texas A&I Univ

Mom also continued her education long before “online“ classes were a thing.

2 BA’s
1 MA
1 PhD

But on weekends,
my parents were
always present.

We weren’t a perfect family,
but mom and dad knew
the importance of the
hearts, minds and souls that
God had trusted them with

No corporate ladder
No job promotion
No client demand

Was more critical than
“doing life“ with their four kids

This is just one more reason
WHY
we do what we do at

Benaiah Consulting Group

THE MATH?

10 Saturdays per year
Over A
10 year span
At a firm that places
their clients & their profits
ahead of your family & kid’s
hearts & minds

Is 10% of those Saturdays
that could change their lives!

Why continue to sacrifice
Your family and your life
At the altar of your job?

You have options!

Local CPA Firm Owners, Are You Prepared
To Battle For Talent On A Remote Basis?

If you are a Local CPA Firm owner/leader,
Several shots have been fired over the bow of your boats
In the last week...

The following firms have announced a major shift in their
Remote Work Mindset and Methodology. Most of the announcements
Were focused on their UK operations, but it's only a matter of time before
Many of these changes begin to ripple into their US offices...

- EY's UK operation says employees will WFH at least two days per week - or more
- KPMG' UK operations has announced a very flexible WFH schedule
- Deloitte's UK teams can "choose" how often they will come to the office
- GT's CEO Brad Preber put it best IMO - "we will not require attendance in our offices or at client sites for every business situation. We know this flexible approach can succeed - because we're already there."

Simply put...
If you are a Local CPA firm owner, partner, leader, manager
And you intend to compete for top talent in the market,
It is time to get on the Remote/Flexible Work model, or

Your recruiting engine is going to come to a screaching halt.

𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 & 𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙙
𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙄𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙚

Continuing with our Father's Day Week
Lessons on Leadership

So many times we expect our kids - and our team members at work - to
"Just Know" how to do the things we expect

Today's Lesson...
𝘿𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙡 '𝙀𝙢
𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬 '𝙀𝙢

When our girls were little, we'd get upset when one of them
Would not share their toys with the other

Then it dawned on me one day...
"That's not natural! It's not normal. How can I expect them
To do something I've never shown them how to do?"

So began our lesson on sharing...

Both of you sit down
Now you give your toy to your sister
Now you watch your sister play with that toy
You celebrate in her joy
You laugh with her laughter
You cheer her on while she's playing with that toy

NOW...

𝙉𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩

Leading a team of people (𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨)
Has a lot of similarities to leading a house full of toddlers

Between all of the BIG WINS, the "FIRSTS", laughter, tears
Early mornings and late sleepless nights
There is a lot of 💩that you are going to have to clean up

Lost opportunities
Upset clients
Exploding diapers
Team members AND Kids that euphemistically AND literally vomit on you
HUGE HUGS
BIG-TIME High Fives
Mountaintop Moments followed by
The DEEPEST, DARKEST valleys

Through it all, keep one simple thought TOP OF MIND...

God gave you charge/responsibility for
THOSE kids
THOSE employees

Because He knew you were exactly what they needed in their lives!
