THE MOST EXPENSIVE DECISION IN BUSINESS IS OFTEN THE ONE YOU DON'T MAKE.

I've seen it more times than I care to count.

A business owner knows an employee isn't performing. Knows a product isn't profitable. Knows a process is broken. Knows something needs to change.

But they wait.

Maybe it'll get better. Maybe next month. Maybe after the holidays. Maybe when things slow down.

Here's the problem. Waiting is a decision, too. And it usually comes with a price tag.

I'm not suggesting business owners make reckless decisions. Quite the opposite.

Get the facts. Understand the consequences. Consider your options.

Then make the damn decision.

You won't always get it right. I certainly haven't.

But I've learned that a wrong decision you recognize and correct can be far less expensive than a right decision you never make.

PLANNING IS A MUST. SO IS KNOWING WHEN TO STOP PLANNING.

I believe in business plans. Budgets. Goals. Forecasts. KPIs. Knowing where you're going and having some idea how you intend to get there.

You can't run a business in the dark.

But there's another side to planning that can be just as dangerous.

Planning can become procrastination.

Another spreadsheet. Another forecast. Another meeting. Another revision. Another month spent getting ready to get ready.

At some point, you have to MOVE.

The best plan isn't something you create in January and admire for the next 12 months. It's a living tool.

Plan. Act. Measure. Adjust. Act again.

You'll learn things by doing that you could never have predicted sitting around a conference table.

Don't run blindly.

But don't spend so much time studying the map that you never leave the driveway either.

Planning gives you direction. Action gives you results. You need both.

GET UNSTUCK.

I talk to a lot of business owners who know something needs to change.

They know the decision they've been avoiding.

They aren't lacking information.

They're stuck.

And the longer you stay stuck, the more expensive it becomes.

Sometimes getting unstuck doesn't require a new business plan, another meeting, or six months of analysis.

Sometimes you just need to identify the next right action and DO IT.

Make the call.
Have the conversation.
Cut the expense.
Change the process.
Ask for the business.
Make the decision.

You don't have to solve everything today.

Just stop standing still.

WHY DO I STILL DO THIS?

I've spent a lot of years in business.

I've had good years, bad years, great decisions, terrible decisions, successes I'm proud of and plenty of lessons I paid for the hard way.

And maybe that's exactly why I enjoy working with business owners today.

I know what it feels like to have people depending on you. To make decisions without knowing for certain they're right. To look at the numbers and know something has to change. To have a problem nobody else in the company can really solve for you.

Business ownership can be incredibly rewarding—but it can also be lonely.

That's a big part of why I started Invent Results.

Not to tell business owners how to run their companies.

To sit across the table, ask the questions others aren't asking, challenge the things that don't make sense, share what I've learned, and help turn decisions into action.

I still get excited when a business owner calls and says, "It worked."

That's the payoff.

CAN YOU STILL SAVE THE YEAR? Absolutely.

There is plenty of 2026 left, and Q4 may be better than you think. But now is the time to make decisions—not hope things improve.

#1 — Trim the dead weight.

Take a hard look at your payroll.

If someone is still employed and consistently delivering less value than their total cost to the business, address it now.

Coach them. Reassign them. Set clear expectations. Give them an opportunity to perform.

But if you've already done those things and nothing has changed, stop carrying the cost into Q4.

This isn't about cutting people to make a spreadsheet look better. It's about protecting the healthy parts of the business and making sure every dollar you spend has purpose.

Three months can change a year.

Don't write off 2026 yet.

THE CALM IN THE CHAOS

People sometimes ask me how I can be involved in multiple businesses at the same time without losing my mind.

The strange answer is...the chaos is actually calming.

Running multiple businesses forces me to prioritize. There is always something that needs attention, something that could be improved, and another opportunity sitting around the corner.

But I’ve learned that not everything deserves my attention
right now.

The chaos forces clarity.

What matters today?
What can wait?
What needs me?
What can someone else own?
What simply doesn't need to be done at all?

I think sometimes we create more stress trying to eliminate chaos than we would by simply learning how to operate within it.

Entrepreneurship isn't about getting everything perfectly organized and finally saying, "There. I'm done."

That day isn't coming.

For me, the calm comes from knowing I don't have to solve everything today. I just need to know what needs to happen next—and then do it.
