Kids, don't forget your dads as this Sunday is Father's Day. Father's Day originated in the United States in 1909, as it was championed by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She was raised by a widowed Civil War veteran, and inspired by the recently established Mother's Day, she wanted to honor the sacrifices her father made to raise six children alone. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge publicly supported the holiday, but it wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed it into permanent law, establishing the third Sunday in June as a national holiday.
