September is Su***de Prevention Month.

The construction industry has one of the highest su***de rates in the United States.

Behind every project are people carrying deadlines, budgets, long hours, family responsibilities, jobsite pressures—and sometimes struggles that never make it onto the schedule.

In construction, we’re trained to identify hazards before they become accidents.

We should approach mental health the same way.

Pay attention. Ask the question. Start the conversation.

You don’t have to be a counselor to make a difference. Sometimes it starts with simply asking:

“Are you okay?”

And when someone isn’t okay, knowing where to turn matters.

Resources like the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline provide free, confidential support 24/7 by calling or texting 988.

For employers, supervisors, project managers, and owners, creating a culture where asking for help isn’t viewed as weakness isn’t just the right thing to do—it can save a life.

At Walk Your Plans Des Moines, we spend our days helping construction teams identify problems before they become costly problems in the field.

This month is a reminder that the people building our projects deserve that same level of attention.

Look out for your crew. Look out for your coworkers. Look out for each other.

Because no project is more important than the people building it.

Think about how many construction problems are discovered only after the project has already moved into construction:

• A clearance doesn’t work.
• A layout creates an operational problem.
• A door conflicts with equipment.
• A patient, customer, employee or resident
workflow doesn’t make sense.
• A room feels too small.
• A piece of equipment doesn’t fit the way
everyone assumed it would.
• A design detail looked fine in 2D—but doesn’t
work at full scale.
• Multiple stakeholders interpreted the plans
differently.

By the time those issues become obvious, the project has already started spending money.

That’s where Walk Your Plans Des Moines changes the equation.

We project any architectural plans at true 1:1 scale, creating an immersive environment where owners, builders, architects, designers, engineers, trades and other stakeholders can walk through the actual space together.

Not another meeting around a conference table.

Not another PDF review.

Not another “it should work.”

Walk it before you build it.

Identify issues earlier, Resolve decisions sooner, Reduce rework and change orders, Improve team alignment, and 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗚𝗠𝗣 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘁.

The technology is simply the enabler.

The real product is better pre-construction decision-making.

A recent Housetrends feature captured what Walk Your Plans studios are proving nationwide: when you project blueprints at true, full-scale size and physically walk through your home before it’s built, you don’t just see mistakes — you feel them, in time to fix them for pennies instead of paying for them in demolition and change orders. The concept has grown to more than 35 locations across the country. Walk Your Plans Des Moines was the 13th to open — June 2025 — and we’ve spent our first year proving exactly how much this matters.

Housetrends cited the national average: 5–10 changes per session, at a cost of roughly $23,000 if caught during construction instead of before.

We didn’t settle for an average. We tracked every single session, ourselves, conservatively.

Our first year, Des Moines:

•1,600+ change elements caught before they became job
site problems
•Over $7.8 million in construction costs avoided
•12+ changes identified per session — every one of them
a mistake that never made it into a framed wall, a poured
foundation, or a client’s regret.

This isn’t a nice-to-have. This isn’t a marketing gimmick or an extra line item you can skip to save a few hundred dollars. This is the difference between a build that goes smoothly and one that doesn’t — between a client who trusts you with their next project and one who never calls you again.

Every custom home is somebody’s dream — and dreams deserve more than a hope that the plan works out. Builders deserve more than finding out mid-framing that it doesn’t. That’s exactly why Walk Your Plans Des Moines exists: so no one has to leave it to chance.

If you’re planning your next custom build — as a homeowner, a builder, or an architect — don’t break ground until you’ve walked it first.

Thank you to the staff from the team from The Lakin Foundation YMCA of Atlantic (soon to be formally known as Nishna Valley Family YMCA) for coming into the studio today. The entire plan other than the pool and two gymnasiums, which will remain unchanged, were reviewed and walked through.

Confirmation of every space. New offices. New concessions, kitchen area, common areas, new locker rooms, a theater, cardio, free weights, and more. Several elements were found to further consider for future use. As social elements, common spaces, and the opportunities for expanding technology change, there were some items marked for additional review. Other elements were simply noted for change. A great plan put together by, Alley Poyner Macchietto (Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture) from Omaha.

This will be a fantastic facility for so many in Atlantic and surround communities. They’re still fundraising and so close to being able to start demo and digging. We look forward to seeing the progress and certainly the finished facility.

Thank you Caliber Homes | Custom Homebuilder for a great walkthrough with your clients today. Great discussions and the clients made some good changes and the future planning about retaining walls, the topography around the home, really shows the forward thinking and hearing the clients needs. Thank you for partnering with us!

General contractors: you’re the group most confident about growth this year — and the group most frustrated with how the industry handles data. That’s not a coincidence.

In the Procore/Censuswide report, general contractors reported the highest confidence in project growth of any group surveyed — and the highest frustration (64%) with how the industry currently leverages data for payments and decision-making.

https://mkt-cdn.procore.com/downloads/reports/HowWeBuildNow_NAMER.pdf

Those two things are connected. The GCs pushing the most volume are the ones feeling the cost of bad information the most — delayed payments, rework, change orders that could’ve been caught earlier.

If you’re a GC in Central Iowa scaling into more commercial work this year, with a steady and growing backlog into 2027, our studio is for you, your clients, and your team to verify, coordinate, and walk your next set of plans at full 1:1 scale…before your crews mobilize. It’s the fastest way we know to protect a schedule you’re already confident about hitting. Let’s make sure you do!

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡?

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗘.

28% of project time. 18% of project time. Add those up and almost half of every project’s timeline is spent on things that shouldn’t have happened.

A stat from the Procore/Censuswide report we shared last week that’s easy to skim past: 28% of total project time is spent on rework, and another 18% is spent searching for data or information.

Add those together and nearly half the clock on every project is spent fixing things or looking for things — not building.
Rework happens because a decision got made without anyone actually seeing how it would play out in the real space.

Searching for data happens because the plan that matters is buried in a folder instead of standing in front of the people who need it.

A Walk Your Plans Des Moines session solves both at once: everyone stands in the actual space, at actual scale, looking at the actual plan, at the same time. Decisions get made once.

Walk Your Plans Des Moines is where you walk your project before it’s built — full scale, true size, at your feet, before a single decision becomes an expensive one.

Every hallway, sightline, and clearance you’d normally discover mid-construction, you discover here first — while it still costs nothing to change.

Residential or commercial.
Owner or architect.
Builder or lender.

If it’s on plans, you walk it before you break ground - sharpening design, tightening planning, and protecting both your budget and your schedule before either one is ever at risk.

This is how projects get built right the first time.

Call us to schedule a time for a complimentary review of your project.

The industry says up to 13% of total project spend could be saved with better preconstruction data. We've already put a real number on that in Iowa.

Earlier this week we shared a national study showing the construction industry believes it can save 13% of total project spend by catching issues earlier and standardizing data.

https://mkt-cdn.procore.com/downloads/reports/HowWeBuildNow_NAMER.pdf

We don't have to wonder if that's true. We've been tracking it session by session.

84 sessions so far this year. More than 300 since we opened nearly 15 months ago.

In our first year June 2025-June 2026 — 1,600 change elements identified before construction started.

A conservative estimate of $7.804M in potential change-order costs avoided for our clients.

That's what happens when you walk a plan at true 1:1 scale before you build it — the clearance that doesn't work, the sightline that's wrong, the door swing that hits the cabinet, the hallway is too narrow, the IT room isn’t large enough to fit your equipment. And on, and on, and on…

You find it on a Tuesday in a studio in Grimes, Iowa, instead of on a Thursday with a crew standing around.

Ready to see it before you build it? Book a session at Walk Your Plans - Des Moines.
