Yesterday began week one of our four-part book discussion for The Life Behind Her Smile: Deadly Secrets with Mountain Be Removed Outreach Center members via Zoom.
We talked about how Melanie struggles to let go of her trauma and how triggers do not disappear just because time has passed. We also discussed how, despite being a therapist, one of the character's mothers completely missed what was happening with her own child, and how easy it is to hide behind careers, titles, ministry, or good intentions while unintentionally neglecting the people closest to us.
One of the biggest takeaways was perspective. This book allows readers to see the same pain through multiple lenses and shows how people can experience very similar trauma but process it completely differently. Their reactions may not look how you want them to look, but that does not mean they are wrong or dramatic or ungrateful.
We spent time talking about communication, especially between parents, guardians, pastors, leaders, and those who are hurting. Many of the situations in this story could have shifted if conversations had been handled differently. Often, adults mean, “This is not the end of the world, you will survive this, I am trying to protect you,” but what is received is, “Your pain does not matter.”
How something is said can be just as important as what is being said. When people feel unheard or dismissed, they shut down. And when communication breaks down, the consequences can be devastating.
This is why this book is not just for teens. It is for parents, leaders, and anyone entrusted with the care of someone else’s heart.
Week one reminded us that listening is not a weakness. It is often the difference between connection and loss.
We are excited to see where the conversation next Monday will take us!
