Roof rats aren’t just a nuisance pest for homeowners. They’re an invasive species in the United States and many other parts of the world, making their removal important for more reasons than simply keeping them out of your house.

But here at P*e Dee Wildlife Control, our primary concern is protecting your home.

Roof rats can cause extensive damage as they chew on electrical wiring, insulation, ductwork, wood, and other components. Finding where they’re living and how they’re getting inside is an important part of solving the problem.

That’s where Hazard comes in!

Hazard is our Decker line rat terrier, and for the past eight years, he’s been locating and helping us remove roof rat infestations from homes. His nose allows him to locate things that aren’t always obvious to our human technicians, including hidden nests and areas of rat activity. He’s also able to assist with crawl space inspections in areas that can be difficult or sometimes impossible for a person to safely access.

He’s been doing this his entire life, and there’s nothing quite like having a highly trained nose on the job. Plus, he particularly enjoys having a job!

Unfortunately, squirrel damage doesn’t stop at the annoying noises you hear coming from the attic.

While we love wildlife, squirrels don’t belong inside your home. Squirrels can be extremely destructive to homes, especially when they gain access to attics. Their constant need to chew can lead to serious damage to structural components, HVAC systems, and electrical wiring!

During a recent inspection for a long term squirrel problem, we found that these squirrels had absolutely wreaked havoc inside this client’s attic. They had even chewed completely through multiple 2x4’s!

This is a perfect example of why wildlife problems shouldn’t be ignored simply because you can tolerate the noise. What may start as a squirrel running around in the attic can eventually turn into tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.

Clients sometimes believe we are over reacting when we deal with circumstances involving bats indoors. However, rabies IS in our area! Unfortunately once symptoms show, it is often too late. So being proactive is always the best approach.

NEVER handle a bat bare handed

For any bats inside a residence for an unknown amount of time, have it tested.

If bats have decided to make your home their new roost, give us a call to make sure they stay outside where they belong!

The Dillon County bat was found near N. 24th and Coker Street in Dillon. One person was exposed and has been referred to their healthcare provider. The Florence County bat was found near Partridge Drive and Clarendon Avenue in Florence. DPH said people should never handle a bat or any wild or stray animal, alive or dead, with their bare hands.

Safety is our #1 priority. No job is worth not making it home at the end of the day!

Lincoln is hard at work today making sure rat snakes can’t squeeze into this clients roof and get cozy in their attic.

Thankfully, with proper PPE, we can perform this work on a 3 story home safely and efficiently for both ourselves and the client!

Did You Know?

That’s not dirt on this gable vent… 👀🦇

At first glance, this vent looks like it’s just covered in years of dirt and grime. But that dark, greasy looking residue is actually something called sebum.

Sebum is an oily substance associated with an animal’s skin and fur. When animals repeatedly squeeze in and out of the same entry point, they can leave behind oils and other residues that gradually build up on the surrounding surfaces.

And this particular vent has a serious buildup.

Why? Because this gable vent has been used by a colony of bats for an extended period of time.

Over and over, bats have been traveling through this same opening, leaving behind oils from their bodies and creating that unmistakable dark staining around the entry point.

For wildlife professionals, these kinds of signs can tell us a LOT about what has been happening inside a structure, even when we don’t see the animals themselves.

So the next time you see a dark, greasy-looking stain around a roof or attic opening, don’t automatically assume it’s dirt. Sometimes, it’s a sign you need to call P*e Dee Wildlife Control LLC 🦇🔎

🐍 It’s baby making and baby having season for snakes across South Carolina! 🐍

Right now, a lot is happening in the snake world.

Many of our egg laying snakes have already laid their eggs, and those eggs are beginning to hatch. At the same time, snakes that give live birth, including our native pit vipers, garter snakes, and water snakes, are having their babies too!

That means you may start seeing a lot more tiny snakes out and about as they disperse and search for a place to call home.

But don’t worry, this sudden increase in snake activity is temporary. The harsh reality is that most of these little snakes won’t make it to adulthood. Birds, raccoons, opossums, and even other snakes will quickly make meals out of many of them. Nature can be rough!

You may also notice increased movement from snakes you normally wouldn’t see.

Take canebrake rattlesnakes for example. They breed in the fall, so throughout much of the year, they can sit in one area for weeks or even months at a time, patiently waiting for food. That makes them easy to overlook.

But when fall rolls around and the males start looking for girlfriends, they become much more active and may travel through yards and other areas in search of a mate. ❤️

The good news is that this increase in movement is also temporary.

So if you happen to run into one of our slithery friends and think you might need a little help, don’t forget you know who to call! 😉🐍

Eastern garter snakes are a really neat native species that we get the opportunity to work with from time to time. We don’t receive nearly as many calls for them as we do species like rat snakes, so it’s always exciting when we do.

They’re small, beautiful snakes that occasionally find themselves in people’s yards.

Unlike what many people think of when they hear the word “snake,” eastern garter snakes rarely eat rodents. Instead, their diet mainly consists of earthworms, frogs, toads, tadpoles, salamanders, and even small fish.

Another interesting fact is that garter snakes don’t lay eggs. They’re one of the few snakes in our area that give birth to live young, with females capable of having as many as 50 babies in a single litter.

Thankfully, we were able to relocate this individual to suitable habitat that was still within its natural home range. Keeping relocations as close as possible greatly improves a snake’s chances of survival because it’s still in familiar territory. We let him finish his meal in the transport bucket, and once he was ready to move on, we released him into his new spot to continue doing what garter snakes do best.

Hopefully he’ll live a long, healthy life while continuing to play his important role in our native ecosystem.

Check out this awesome video we captured at a client’s home today!

Whenever possible, we try to minimize our impact on the wildlife we work with. While our priority is always protecting our clients’ homes, we also believe that if there’s a safe, effective way to avoid unnecessary loss of wildlife, it’s worth the extra effort.

In this case, a female raccoon had chosen the client’s crawl space and wall cavities as a den site to raise her young. While they may look cute, raccoons can cause extensive damage to a home by tearing up insulation, damaging HVAC ductwork, and tearing at electrical wiring.

Many people don’t realize that in South Carolina, raccoons are considered a rabies vector species and state law requires that any trapped raccoon be euthanized because they cannot legally be relocated.

Thankfully, situations like this don’t always require trapping.

By using scent based techniques along with controlled hazing from our trained terriers, Hazard and Ruckus, we’re often able to encourage a mother raccoon to relocate her juveniles to a new den site on her own. This gives the female a chance to continue raising their juveniles elsewhere without remaining inside someone’s home.

We then monitor the den with remote cameras to confirm that the mother has successfully moved all of her juveniles and has not returned. Once we’re certain the den is vacant, we permanently exclude the home by sealing the entry points so that no raccoons, or any other wildlife, can move back into the crawl space.

In the end, everyone benefits. The homeowner gets their home back without ongoing damage, the raccoon family gets a second chance in a hopefully more appropriate location, and the house is protected from future wildlife intrusions.

That’s what we call a true win, win!

🐿️ They’re cute in the backyard… but they’re a nightmare in your attic.

There’s no denying squirrels are adorable, but once they decide your home is the perfect place to move in, the honeymoon is over.

These determined little rodents are expert chewers, capable of gnawing through wood, shingles, soffits, fascia, ridge vents, and even plastic vent covers to gain access to your attic. Once inside, the damage can add up quickly. We’ve seen everything from torn HVAC ductwork and shredded insulation to chewed electrical wiring that creates a serious fire hazard. They’ll also contaminate insulation, destroy stored belongings, and raise entire litters of juveniles above your ceiling.

The good news? You don’t have to share your home with them.

At P*e Dee Wildlife Control, we don’t just trap and remove squirrels, we solve the problem! Our professional exclusion services are designed to identify every potential entry point, remove the squirrels, and permanently seal your home to help ensure they can’t get back inside.
