Tuned a spinet recently in a home with a gorgeous view of the lake. I'm happy to tune in all conditions, but I can't overstate how nice a good view and good lighting is while tuning.

Summer is coming and sadly you'll see less frequent posting here on FB page. Our tuner - David (myself) - has ties to the kayak industry, particularly on Lake Hartwell and the Broad River and will be spending the majority of his time outside for the foreseeable future. (for the curious, those endeavors include Lake Hartwell Kayak Rental and Delivery and The Sandbar)

But don't let that keep you from reaching out if you're in need of piano tuning! We are squeezing in what tunings we can during the hot months, and building our fall schedule as requests arrive.

Spent some time with a couple of spinets. One was a gorgeous ~70 year old Kohler & Campbell that has sat a good while since last tuning. The other is a pristine Yamaha that features an interesting mechanical mute system that lowers a felt strip between the hammers and strings when the middle pedal is pressed.

I recently tuned a local piano that gets regular use from a high school-aged musician. While it's awesome enough for young talent to put in regular practice (look at that pedal!), I couldn't help taking a picture of a tribute that shares the room. This musician is a drummer as well, and the tribute is made of all the drum sticks he has broken in the line of duty - particularly in the HCHS marching band.
It's quite impressive.

Special mention: This piano had a guide inside with details regarding the action of the piano. I'd not seen such a guide before and found it interesting.

I recently had the opportunity to work on a piano that belonged to my wife's grandmother, and now her aunt. It's a beautiful Wurlitzer that doesn't appear to have aged a day since its purchase in the early 2000s. Service included tuning, some action lubricating, and ended with an above-and-beyond polishing. She's a special piano after all.

Worked on my first Mathushek piano the other day. It had been a while since she was tuned or serviced and there was much room for improvement.
My services - at least on the initial visit - include some examination and cleaning so every piano gets partially dismantled. (see last pic) This Mathushek was no exception and had some unique design features I'd not seen before. As always, it's a joy to explore and improve the mechanics and tuning in old pianos.

Sad post time

(brace yourself for that video. This piano does not produce a joyful sound)

I met a well-aged, well-loved piano not long ago, still with its original owner. After rudimentary cleaning and significant diagnosing I had to give the client bad news. The piano's pin block is shot, as evidenced by tuning pins refusing to hold tension even after I tried a range of improvements. This piano will likely have to be rebuilt before it can ever hold a tune again.

At the end of the day it will always be the owner's preference if an instrument is worth such an effort. Today it was not. I told her I'd keep my eyes peeled for a service that can come collect it.

I recently tuned a beautiful old spinet that's been in a guest's family for a long time. Deep inside the piano I found a business card of the last tuner who serviced the piano. I'm willing to bet he's retired since this.
I agree with the card's advice: Have your piano tuned twice a year. Failing that, at least once every sixty-three years will suffice.

There's nothing like a piano in a room with a great view, especially with the approaching spring.

I worked on an old spinet that hadn't been tuned in some time - decades maybe - and had been moved since last tuning. She had collected some dust and even bits of tree somehow so I cleaned that out then got her back in shape. Sometimes the more out of tune a piano is, the better it sounds once tuned.
I appreciate a nice view while working and that day I had a front row seat to the lake and the drama playing out below the bird feeders.

I am being spoiled by gorgeous pianos in beautifully lit rooms. Thank you, Lori, for allowing me to tune this fine instrument.

As a relatively young business, my opportunities to learn are constant. This was the first player piano I've tuned. The merging of technology and intricate mechanics is a bit mind blowing.
