Does this cute little guy belong to someone? ❤️

This friendly little guy was found in the middle of N Ave E, approximately 2–3 blocks from 2163, approaching vehicles. A truck had to go around him, which is how he was noticed and picked up to keep him safe.

He is not wearing a collar, and we’d love to get him safely back home to his family!

This is something everyone should keep in mind, ESPECIALLY if you have elderly parents/grandparents living alone. They are the most vulnerable to these types of scams. The scammers get them worked up and panicked and steal their limited income with little chance of recovery.

Please have a discussion with your senior family members and explain to them what types of scams are out there and to not even listen to them if they start demanding money and/or gift cards. It can be a really stressful situation for them. Once the money is gone there is NO WAY to recover it.

⚠️ PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT – SCAM WARNING ⚠️

I want to make everyone aware of scams that are continuing to target people in our community and surrounding areas.

Scammers may call pretending to be with the FBI, a police department, sheriff’s office, another government agency, or even claiming to be handling an estate or other legal matter. They can sound very convincing. They may know your name or other personal information, and they may tell you that you owe money, have a warrant, missed jury duty, are entitled to money from an estate, or need to make an immediate payment to avoid legal trouble.

A major RED FLAG is when they tell you to purchase gift cards and then call them back with the numbers from those cards.

Do not do it.

Legitimate law enforcement and government agencies will not call you and demand that you pay a fine, warrant, or other obligation with gift cards.

If you receive one of these calls:

• Do not give them personal or financial information.
• Do not purchase gift cards or send money.
• Do not trust the phone number showing on your caller ID. Scammers can make it appear that they are calling from a legitimate agency.
• Hang up and independently contact the agency or organization they claim to represent using a phone number you know is legitimate.
• If you are unsure, ask someone you trust before sending any money.

Please also take a few minutes to talk with your parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends about these scams. Scammers are very good at creating fear and urgency so that someone acts before having time to think.

If someone is demanding money immediately and telling you not to hang up or not to talk to anyone else, STOP. Hang up and verify it yourself.

Haskell, meet Marianne Margaritis, the new Executive Director of the Haskell Chamber of Commerce!

Originally from New England, Marianne and her husband, Mark, made the move to Texas in December 2024. Drawn to the independence, values, and strong sense of community they found in rural Texas, they are excited to put down roots and call Haskell home.

Marianne brings experience in administration, business relations, community outreach, event coordination, marketing, nonprofit and volunteer work, and public engagement. But more than anything, she brings a genuine desire to connect with people and help make things happen.

As Executive Director, Marianne is looking forward to getting to know the people behind Haskell’s businesses, helping our local businesses gain visibility, welcoming new businesses, supporting community events, and finding new ways for the Chamber to serve its members.

“I want to hear from our businesses — not just about what they’re doing, but about what they need. I want the Chamber to be a resource people actually feel comfortable coming to.”

Marianne and Mark have also pursued their own small-business endeavors, giving her firsthand appreciation for the hard work, determination, and creativity it takes to build something of your own.

We’ve got TWO great community events happening on the same day, and there’s plenty of time for families to enjoy both however it works best for them!

🛍️ Citywide Garage Sale
Shop all day around Haskell and find some great deals, treasures, and unique finds. Make it a family adventure or tag‑team it — one parent shops while the other enjoys STEM activities with the kids, then switch. Whatever works for your crew.

🔬 FREE Family STEM Day
Hosted by Google and Discovery Education, this hands‑on event at the Haskell Civic Center is open to all K‑12 students and their families. Enjoy STEM challenges, digital learning experiences, raffles, prizes, a complimentary lunch, and tons of interactive fun.

On Saturday, October 3rd, Google and Discovery Education will host a FREE Family STEM Day at the Haskell Civic Center!

This event is open to K-12 students and their families and will include hands-on STEM challenges, digital learning experiences, interactive activity stations, raffles, prizes, a complimentary lunch and lots of family-friendly activities centered around science, technology, engineering and math.

I’m really excited to see opportunities like this being brought right here to Haskell. Giving our kids a chance to explore technology, learn something new and have fun doing it is something I hope our families will take advantage of!

HASKELL-AREA HOMEOWNERS: FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR SAFE ROOMS
With severe weather being a reality here in West Texas, having a secure place to shelter can provide valuable peace of mind when the weather turns dangerous.
The West Central Texas Council of Governments (WCTCOG) is currently offering a Residential Safe Room Program that provides eligible homeowners with a 50% rebate, up to $3,000, toward the installation of a qualifying safe room/storm shelter.
A few important program requirements: 🏠 Applicant must own the home (or be a builder/developer)
💰 50% rebate — up to $3,000
🏗️ Shelter must be installed by a FEMA-approved vendor
📋 Must meet FEMA Standard P-320
📍 WCTCOG representative must conduct a site visit
⚠️ All safe rooms/storm shelters must be installed by June 30, 2027
Funding is available, but the program timeline is limited, so interested homeowners are encouraged to learn more and apply as soon as possible.

🍂 Haskell Fall Festival — October 31st! 🍁
We’re gearing up for a fun afternoon on the square from 3:00–4:30pm with games, treats, and plenty of community spirit. And don’t worry — you’ll still have lots of time afterward to take the kiddos trick‑or‑treating.

People are already reaching out so they can plan ahead, so I’m putting together our booth list and sponsor roster now. If your business, organization, or club would like to set up a booth or help sponsor this year’s festival, message me and I’ll get you added.
