Microplastics are everywhere right now: in the headlines, and increasingly in us.

Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Plastic doesn’t disappear when it breaks down, it only gets smaller. These fragments carry chemicals from manufacturing and overtime pick up others from the environment.

They’ve been found in the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe and even human blood. Researchers suspect they may harm reproductive, digestive and respiratory health, and may lead to lung and colon cancer.

Recycling was supposed to be the solution. But only about 9% of plastic created has ever been recycled, and most plastic can only be reused a few times before it degrades too much to use.

At būmi, we’re not trying to build better plastic. We’re building a different material.

Our products are made from upcycled agricultural biowaste and microbe edible polymers. They’re built to hold up like conventional plastic while they’re in use, then soil microbes break them down completely. No microplastics, no forever chemicals, nothing left behind but healthy soil.

Plastic is the problem būmi is solving. Every product we make is microbe-edible from the start, created from upcycled agricultural materials. No more plastic created, no landfill chapter, no incineration, no centuries-long breakdown.

So why mulch film? Mulch film warms the soil, locks in moisture, blocks w**d growth and disease, and creates a consistent growing environment, leading to bigger harvests. Typically, after the growing season, with plastic mulch film, the next step is to haul and dispose of it. With būmigro mulch film, the process is much simpler. After the growing season, all you do is till it in, letting the soil microbes break it back down into healthy soil. 🌎🌱

70% of plastic ends up in landfills or nature every year. At būmi, we are trying to reduce that number. Our microbe-edible mulch film is made from agricultural waste and works exactly like plastic.
