Remember what Walmart did to small-town America?

When Walmart started expanding, a lot of small businesses were worried.

They had reason to be.

Walmart could operate more efficiently, offer lower prices, stay open longer, carry more inventory, and serve more customers.

Many small businesses adapted, many didn’t and some disappeared all together.

Comparing the Walmart disruption to what AI is about to do is like comparing a ripple to a tidal wave.

I don’t believe AI is going to replace every business or every employee. There are many things AI cannot do.

But I do believe businesses that completely refuse to adopt AI are putting themselves in a dangerous position.

Because while they’re doing business the way they’ve always done it, their competitors are using AI to:

• Respond to leads in seconds
• Follow up when humans forget
• Answer calls 24/7
• Reactivate old customers
• Automate repetitive work
• Improve customer service
• Accomplish more with fewer resources

The biggest threat to your business probably isn’t AI. It’s the business down the street that figures out how to use AI before you do.

Walmart changed how businesses competed.

AI is changing what it means to compete.

In 1916 the Chicago Tribune called Henry Ford an "ignorant idealist." He sued them!

At trial, the Tribune's lawyers spent days quizzing him on American history to prove the point. Who was Benedict Arnold. How many soldiers the British sent over in 1776. He fumbled most of it.

Then he leaned forward and said this:

"If I should really want to answer the foolish question you have just asked, or any of the other questions you have been asking me, let me remind you that I have a row of electric push-buttons on my desk, and by pushing the right button, I can summon to my aid men who can answer any question I desire to ask concerning the business to which I am devoting most of my efforts. Now, will you kindly tell me, why I should clutter up my mind with general knowledge, for the purpose of being able to answer questions, when I have men around me who can supply any knowledge I require?"

Ford was not defending ignorance. He was defending leverage. He refused to spend his own mind on work that could be handed off, because his mind was worth more pointed at the things nobody else could do.

We all have that row of buttons now. It sits on every desk and lives in every mobile phones. It’s call AI.

So the challenge is not "use AI more."

Find one thing you are still doing yourself this week that an AI system could do for you. Then stop doing it!

Proposals. Meeting recaps. First-draft copy. Prospect research. Intake. SOP writing.

Pick one of those tasks to end this week.

If you spend next week doing work a machine could have done for you, then you are missing out on your highest value task.

My dad was a pastor for over 60 years. He didn't just preach about loving your neighbor. He lived it. He'd go out of his way to do something for someone else, especially when they were going through a hard time. His three boys served alongside him more times than I can count.

His greatest legacy isn't his sermons. It's how he loved his neighbors.

He's 83 now and still does the exact same thing. His example shaped how I live my life and how I run my agency.

I find zero joy in pitching something a client doesn't see as meaningful. What drives me is helping them navigate the real problems sitting in front of them.

Every day I ask myself: how can I serve others the way I've been served? How can I help a business get through the hardest challenge they're facing today?

There's no single playbook for this. Every business owner does it differently. But the ones I respect most all have this in common: they show up for their clients the way a good neighbor shows up. Not because it closes deals. Because it's who they are.

Whatever you do to serve your clients, your neighbors, keep doing it. And get better at it.

Keep serving. Keep adding value.

Every week there's a new AI tool that promises to replace consultants like me.
Here's the truth: the tools keep getting cheaper and more powerful. That's not a threat to what I do, it's the whole point.

The hard part was never wiring software together. The hard part is knowing what's actually broken in your business, what should be automated, what shouldn't, and whether the fix actually moves revenue.

That's what I do before I build anything. I sit with a business owner, figure out where leads are getting lost or time is getting wasted, then build the fix and hand it to your team so they can run it without needing me for every tweak.

The tools will keep changing. What a business needs from someone like me won't.
If you're a [RIA / chiropractic practice / nonprofit / home services business] wondering if AI actually applies to you or if it's just noise, that's the conversation worth having.

Just talked to a business owner running ELEVEN brands across multiple cities. One man and his family, behind all of it. You heard right.

The kicker? 11 websites, only 1 running ads. No follow-up, no review system, no reactivation, no automation. Years of profitable work and every single lead still depends on him.

He's not lazy or behind. He's a successful guy who's completely overwhelmed. Owner, operator, sales, support, and marketing all at once. Honestly, I'd need a prescription to cope.

The opportunity here isn't creating more demand. It's capturing and reactivating the demand that's already there.

Sometimes growth isn't about more advertising. It's about fixing the leaks in the bucket.

This one's going to be fun.
