Attended my first North Carolina Association of Private Investigators (NCAPI) Conference this week. I learned so much in a short time, but more importantly made new friends and connections while feeling a sense of pride and optimism about the profession.

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker is one of the most practical books on personal safety ever written.

DeBecker is known for advising high-profile clients on threat assessment and protection—but this book is written for everyday people navigating everyday situations.

I first read it in 1998 and have revisited it several times since. The core message still holds true: your intuition is often your first and best line of defense.

In my years in law enforcement and investigations, I’ve seen firsthand how often warning signs are present—but ignored.

If there’s one takeaway from this book, it’s this: Trust your instincts. They’re based on more information than you consciously realize.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to be more aware, prepared, and confident in their daily life.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Don’t Fall for This Text Message 🚨

This scam is making its way around our area.....again.

If you receive a message claiming to be from the North Carolina DMV saying you owe money for a traffic violation and threatening license suspension, vehicle registration revocation, collections, or legal action, do not click the link. It is a scam.

These messages are designed to create urgency and pressure you into providing personal or financial information.

✅ The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles does not send final payment threats by text message with suspicious links.

🔹 Do not click unknown links
🔹 Do not provide personal or banking
🔹 Delete the message and report it as spam
🔹 If you are unsure about the status of your license, registration, or any citation, contact NCDMV directly through official channels

Scammers continue to use government names and urgent language to trick people into reacting quickly. Slow down, verify before you click, and help protect friends and family by sharing this warning.

If you have questions or believe you may have provided information, contact local law enforcement or monitor your accounts immediately. 🔒📱

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Do Not Fall for This Notice 🚨

If you receive a notice like the one shown below claiming to be from the State of North Carolina regarding unpaid tolls, court enforcement, license suspension, or immediate payment demands — do not scan the QR code, click links, or send money.
This document is fraudulent and is designed to create panic by using official-looking seals, court language, and threats of penalties.
⚠️ Red flags to watch for:
• Pressure to act immediately
• QR codes or suspicious payment links
• Threats involving license suspension, court action, or credit reporting
• Generic case details that do not match any official court paperwork
• Poor formatting or unusual wording
✅ What to do instead:
• Verify directly through official North Carolina court or DMV websites
• Contact the Clerk of Court or NCDMV using publicly listed phone numbers
• Never rely on contact information provided on suspicious notices
📌 Remember: Official agencies do not demand payment through random QR codes or unofficial links sent by text, email, or suspicious notices.
If you receive something questionable, report it and warn others. A few minutes of caution can prevent identity theft or financial loss.
