A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent was shot on patrol Thursday night on Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area in Ouachita Parish. As of early Friday morning, he was hospitalized in serious condition.
According to the department, Sgt. Scott Bullitt, 32, of Jonesboro and another agent stopped a vehicle containing two motorists. After a short interview, Bullitt believed the occupants to be impaired, and walked back toward his vehicle.
According to the department, the passenger of the stopped vehicle then shot Bullitt in the lower back. He was later identified as Luke Jarrod Hust, 29, of Monroe.

After calling for help, the other agent apprehended the driver, who was later brought in for questioning.
LDWF agents, State Police, Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies, Monroe police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents set up a perimeter around the area, and searched for Hust. He was apprehended and arrested at 11 p.m., four hours after the shooting.
AccScott Bullitt_IMG_1767ording to the department, Bullitt received the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission DWI Award on March 24. He was selected for the award due to his dedication to make Louisiana’s waterways and roadways safer for the traveling public by removing impaired drivers, the department said.
“This is a sad day for all wildlife and fisheries agents in the country,” said Col. Broussard, head of the LDWF Enforcement Division. “Our agents travel into remote areas patrolling public lands often, and it can be a very dangerous task, as we saw tonight. My thoughts at this time are with Sgt. Bullitt and his family and also the brave men and women that contributed to catching the shooter.”
