Fire Prevention Week has been observed for more than a century, with its roots connected to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. What began as an effort to bring greater attention to fire safety has grown into an annual reminder that many fires can be prevented through awareness, preparation and simple changes in everyday habits.

In Hawaii, fire prevention may look a little different. We don't have the same seasonal shift toward furnaces, fireplaces and space heaters experienced in colder parts of the country, but that doesn't make the risk any less important.

Cooking fires, overloaded electrical circuits, damaged cords, outdoor grilling, candles, improperly stored flammable materials and equipment failures can happen in any climate. Hawaii's warm weather also means grills, outdoor kitchens and other potential ignition sources may be used throughout the year. Dry vegetation and windy conditions can add another layer of concern when it comes to outdoor fires.

Fire Prevention Week is a good time to test smoke alarms, check electrical cords and outlets, review your family's escape plan, look for hazards around the home and make sure everyone knows what to do if a fire occurs.

Warm weather means outdoor cooking, open windows and doors, year-round air conditioning, and plenty of time spent outside. Grills should be kept away from buildings and combustible materials, electrical cords and outlets should be checked for damage, and overloaded circuits should be avoided. Homes, vacation rentals, condos, restaurants, and commercial properties should have working smoke alarms and accessible fire extinguishers.

Salt air, humidity, and moisture can also be tough on electrical components and outdoor equipment, making regular inspections especially important.

Charging cords can become a fire hazard, particularly when they’re damaged, poorly made, overloaded, or used in ways that trap heat. The cord itself isn’t always the underlying cause; the risk often comes from the combination of the cable, charger, outlet, battery, and how they’re being used.

Common problems include frayed insulation that exposes wiring, loose or damaged connectors that generate heat, cheap or counterfeit chargers without adequate safety protections, and cords repeatedly bent or crushed near the plug. Charging phones, tablets, laptops, power banks, e-bikes, or other lithium-ion devices on beds, couches, carpets, or beneath pillows and blankets can also prevent heat from dissipating.

Lithium-ion batteries deserve particular attention because a damaged, defective, or overheating battery can enter thermal runaway, creating an intense fire that can spread rapidly. Charging equipment should be treated as electrical equipment—not something to leave buried under bedding or plugged into a questionable extension cord indefinitely.

Mold can hide inside walls long before there is an obvious problem on the surface. A slow plumbing leak, roof intrusion, condensation, or moisture from a previous water loss can become trapped inside a wall cavity, creating conditions for mold growth where it cannot easily be seen.

In Honolulu properties, watch for musty odors, discoloration, bubbling or peeling paint, soft drywall, staining around baseboards, or walls that remain unusually damp or cool. Sometimes the first visible sign appears well after moisture has entered the wall.
