A while back, I was brought in to help a company through some rough leadership challenges.
During a pulse check, an employee confided that the CEO had broken her trust and violated her values.

Instead of a retention pep talk, I listened. With her permission, I shared perspective on what was and wasn’t in our control, and together we focused on what she could control — her peace, her energy, and what it was costing her to stay.

A few days later she resigned — unapologetically and with her dignity intact. And guess what?! I supported her decision to put her well-being first.

That day reminded me: she didn’t need advice. She needed psychological safety — space to process, to breathe, to decide.

Sometimes the best thing managers and HR leaders can do isn’t to retain at all costs but to create clarity, dignity, and a clean exit when trust has eroded. This creates a balance by protecting the individual, the culture, and the employer brand while giving leadership clear feedback on where rebuilding is needed.
