Underweight bass are a common problem among lake owners. Usually a result of overcrowding or lack of forage fish, the underweight fish often appear to have heads disproportionately larger than their bodies. As scientists, we would say they have a low relative weight. Our goal would be to improve that over time with various techniques such as harvesting and stocking additional forage.
The first picture shows a bass with very low relative weight caught during a consultation. The second fish was caught off a public reservoir and exhibits a normal, healthy relative weight. There is only a 1 inch difference in length but you can clearly see the difference in girth.
