Ask a national supplier who commissions your generator. The honest answer is usually "you do."

That is the actual difference between buying a box and buying a working bench, and it does not show up on the quote.

Here is what an on-site gas project looks like when a local partner runs it with you.

Assess. A Sales Engineer reviews your detectors, your current gas sources and your real flow demand at peak rather than average. Free, and you keep the written specification whether or not you buy anything.

Spec. Model selection with headroom for the instruments you are adding next, not only the ones you are running today.

Commission. On site, once the equipment is placed and connected, verified against specification before anyone relies on it.

Train. Your analysts and facilities team, on the actual unit, not a slide deck.

Support. Preventive maintenance, calibration, parts and service. The part that decides whether year three is uneventful.

Two things stay with you, and we are direct about both. Physical placement and plumbing belong to your facility or your contractor. Method re-establishment belongs to your lab, because your analysts have to be the ones who validate it. We share what we have seen work across other conversions and we are on the phone while you do it.

Same engineer through all five steps.

Filtration and conversion are not the same thing, and your baseline knows the difference.

A filter fills up. A catalyst does not.

That distinction is the whole reason an on-site zero air generator behaves differently from the carbon trap on your house air line.

A trap adsorbs. It holds hydrocarbons on a bed until the bed is saturated, and then it passes them straight through. You get no warning. The baseline simply starts drifting again, gradually enough that most labs go looking at the column first.

Catalytic oxidation converts. Air passes over a heated platinum-group bed and the hydrocarbons come out the other side as CO₂ and water. Nothing is stored, so nothing saturates.

There is a second difference that catches more labs out. Activated carbon handles C₃ and above reasonably well. It does not remove methane. Methane breaks through a carbon trap within hours to days and reaches the flame, where an FID counts it exactly like any other carbon.

At under 0.05 ppm total hydrocarbons, methane included, your detection limit stops being a function of what the air happened to contain that morning. It becomes a function of your method, which is the only variable in the chain you actually control.

We are running complimentary FID Gas Assessments for a limited time. A Sales Engineer sizes the zero air and hydrogen your bench needs and writes you a specification you keep either way.

Both of these are the same sample.

That is a healthy GC-FID, correctly reporting what reached the detector. Every diagnostic you would run on it comes back clean. The column is fine. The inlet is fine. The method is fine.

The only difference between these two traces is the air feeding the flame.

An FID burns hydrogen in air and counts the carbon it sees. It cannot tell carbon that arrived in your sample from carbon that arrived in your air supply. Cylinder air varies bottle to bottle. House compressors pull in whatever the building breathes. An activated-carbon trap removes the heavier hydrocarbons and lets methane through within days.

The lower trace is the same injection on catalytic zero air at under 0.05 ppm THC. Same peaks, same retention times. The baseline is flat because the only carbon left is yours.

That is the entire argument for on-site zero air, and it is the kind of problem that survives troubleshooting, which is what makes it expensive.

Want a free FID gas assessment? A Sales Engineer specs the zero air and hydrogen pair for your bench and writes you a specification you keep either way. No obligation or commitment required.

Traces illustrate the effect of air-supply hydrocarbons on an FID baseline, not data from a specific instrument.

One liter of liquid nitrogen becomes about 700 liters of gas — enough to push breathable oxygen out of a small lab.
That's why cryogenic dewars carry cold-burn and asphyxiation risk and often need an oxygen-depletion monitor on the wall. On-site membrane generation removes the cryogenic hazard entirely: it makes what your LC-MS needs from ordinary compressed air, at safe pressures, on demand.

Friday Fact #3: the safest dewar is the one you no longer need. Worth a forward to whoever owns lab safety in your building.

Your nitrogen dewar lost money last weekend — while the lab sat empty.
Liquid nitrogen evaporates around the clock. Nights, weekends, holidays: gas you already paid for vents off whether a single sample ran or not. A membrane generator only makes nitrogen when your LC-MS actually asks for it — from the air that's already there. Nothing to deliver, nothing to lose to evaporation.

Friday Fact #2: the cheapest nitrogen is the kind you don't have to keep buying. Ever added up your annual dewar rentals + deliveries? The number surprises most people.
