In this season of , , and celebrations, let's turn up the volume on the chorus of support for an enduring memorial to a courageous leader: the late Shirley Chisholm.

Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to serve in Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district. During her seven consecutive terms from 1969 to 1983, she set a stellar record as an advocate for the interests of low-income people and for policies advancing racial and gender equity. She also led a remarkable campaign in 1972 to become the first woman ever to see the White House in a major political party's primary.

This year marks the centennial anniversary of Chisholm's birth. It is a fitting time to honor the legacy of her valiant fight for our nation's inherent promises of opportunity for all people. The Shirley Chisholm Statue Act and the Shirley Chisholm Gold Medal Act enjoy bipartisan support as well as considerable support from a broad coalition of stakeholders.

Use the attached templates as guides to let your voice of support be heard by calling and/or emailing your elected House and Senate members before their summer recess begins in August.

I also want to recommend these films about Chisholm on Netflix and Amazon Prime: the biopic "Shirley," starring Regina King, and the documentary "Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed."
