The decision in Plessy v. Ferguson to officially sanction “separate but equal” in 1896 gave rise to the Jim Crow era. In the ensuing decades, activists worked diligently to overturn this law.

Today, the United States grapples with the aftermath of the Jim Crow era in the form of systemic racism and policies that are inherently racist. After 125 years, we can look back to where it all came together. But, we can also look forward, to the long awaited changes to rectify the wrongs of the past.
