LR COO Mark Darley recently visited Alang, one of the world's largest ship recycling hubs, to see first-hand how the sector continues to evolve.

One year after the Hong Kong Convention entered into force, improvements in facilities and processes are helping to strengthen standards for safe and environmentally sound ship recycling.

Recent developments, including four Indian ship recycling facilities now certified in accordance with EU Compliance requirements and submitting their applications for inclusion in the latest EU facilities list, demonstrate the continued progress being made. With recycling activity expected to increase in the coming years, ensuring facilities are prepared will be increasingly important.

LR supports shipowners and recycling facilities around the world through advisory services and independent audits, helping to deliver safe, sustainable and compliant ship recycling.

While the global orderbook remains at historically high levels, ship recycling activity continues to sit at historic lows, with only 166 vessels (around 5.5 million dwt) reported for recycling so far this year.

Strong freight markets, low steel prices and high second-hand vessel values have all contributed to lower recycling activity. As new vessels enter service over the next two to three years, recycling volumes are expected to increase, placing greater focus on responsible end-of-life vessel management.

LR researchers Asger Christian Schliemann Haug and Duncan Duffy recently took evidence on alarm fatigue in shipping to Westminster, briefing MPs and peers on how the growing volume of onboard alerts can contribute to cognitive overload and affect safety-critical decision-making at sea.

Presented as part of during Evidence Week in Parliament 2026, the research highlights the importance of a more human-centred approach to alarm management as ships become increasingly digitalised. It is a reminder that safer shipping depends not only on technology, but on designing systems that help people make the right decisions when it matters most.

Asger and Duncan presented their research as part of Risk Know-How, a collaboration between Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Sense about Science and NUS Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk.

June 2026 marks another important milestone in Lloyd’s Register’s global history.

This week, we celebrate 140 years of operating in Brazil. On 24 June 1886, the first first non-exclusive surveyor was appointed in Rio de Janeiro. This was followed by the first LR office opening in Bahia in 1888, appointing its first exclusive surveyor in 1896.

We celebrate sharing a few photographs from the archive showing surveyors at work:
• LR surveyor examining propeller boss finish, Rio de Janeiro. Taken in 1977.
• LR surveyor checks gear tiller at works of electro ACO Altona Blumenau Brazil. The gear is for a 135,000 dwt tanker building to LR class by Verolme for Petrobras. Taken in 1977.
• A São Paulo surveyor inspects the preliminary assembly of the spiral casing for a 104,000 HP Francis turbine under construction for the RB Russel hydroelectric project in the USA. Taken in 1992.
• Arkansas project gear pit and draft tube liner LR surveyor M. V. Borges from Brazil São Paulo Office. Taken in 1992.
• LR surveyor A. B. Carvalho at Estaleiro Maua where construction of two product tankers for Petrobras 50,000 dwt had just begun. Taken in 1986.

June 2026 marks two important milestones in LR’s global history: 140 years in Sri Lanka and 140 years in Egypt.

In Sri Lanka, LR's first non-exclusive surveyor was appointed in Colombo in 1886, with the first exclusive surveyor following in 1945. In Egypt, the first non-exclusive surveyor was appointed in Alexandria in 1886, with the first exclusive surveyor appointed just half a decade later, in 1891.

These anniversaries offer an opportunity to reflect on LR’s long-standing presence in both countries and the generations of colleagues whose expertise and dedication have supported maritime and industrial development over the past 140 years.
