A new story in our Fentanyl Awareness Series premieres TONIGHT at 7pm central time on the Texas Pictures Documentaries YouTube channel. Mother Sue Choate-Brye and stepfather Steve Brye of Clayton, California, share the story of their son Jeffrey Choate, who died alone in a motel in January 2022 after a long struggle with substance use disorder. Jeff was remembered as a funny, joyful, kind and talented young man who loved baseball, art, and making people laugh. His addiction began after he was prescribed large amounts of opioid medication as a teenager, eventually leading to years of treatment attempts, homelessness, incarceration, and repeated efforts by his family to find him lasting help.

Isaiah was only 18 years old when a counterfeit drug containing fentanyl and xylazine took his life.

He was bright, compassionate, and deeply loved, but he had been struggling with substance use since his teenage years. His mother, Stephanie, repeatedly tried to find help, but says gaps in treatment and mental-health care made that fight even harder.

Today, she honors Isaiah by helping other teens and families through Hope Above Fear.

Her message is simple: your story does not have to end here. You can begin again.

Rosalind Petteway-Waddy shares about when she received a heartbreaking phone call. Her grandson was not breathing.
Andron Petteway was at a friends house when he was found unresponsive. After over an hour passed, the ambulance was finally called by the friends mother. In this video, Rosalind speaks about calling the friends mom. She says that she seemed "nonchalant" and unworried about the love of her grandson.
