Important to know for tax filings in 2026.
The U.S. Postal Service has updated its postmark rules, effective as of December 24, 2025. Under the new rule, a machine-applied postmark reflects the date of first automated processing, which may occur after mail is dropped off.
This change may affect whether tax filings and payments are considered timely under IRC Sec. 7502. To help ensure compliance, taxpayers should request a manual postmark at a USPS retail counter or use Registered or Certified Mail to document the mailing date.
Staying informed is key to managing compliance risk.
