Do you walk your talk? Do you live your values? As a leadership development consultant, it's important for me to give back to the professional community which has provided me with continued education and the opportunities to network and collaborate with inspiring colleagues. This month, I turned over the presidential gavel to the National Speakers Association Houston chapter, concluding the commitment to this role during Covid's second year.
As another chapter in my leadership journey has drawn to a close, I've reflected on the other presidential roles I've taken on, including the Houston chapters of Association for Talent Development (ATD) and Institute of Management Consultants (IMC). If you aspire to leadership, I encourage you to volunteer at any level within your professional associations to give back. You'll benefit in many ways that will often take years to unfold and discover. My biggest takeaway this time: a reminder that many members wait to be asked rather than volunteer for any task or role themselves.
As a leader within your organization, take this to heart: many employees are waiting for you to ask them to step up and take on new responsibilities - not because they are scared to ask, but rather they are scared to hear that they are not needed - confirming that they are not valued. When leaders hesitate or fail to delegate because time is short or they'd rather do the task themselves (either because they could do it better or because they like the task), they reinforce a nagging fear of employees that they are not good enough, valued, or trusted. Stop!! Start delegating. Start asking employees to take on new projects. Don't wait for employees to tell you they felt ignored, devalued, unable to contribute, or disappointed that you didn't ask .... as they are turning in their resignations.
