Someone asked me the other day - “How’s it going?” - and my response was “Good! Busy!!" But if truth be told, my answer didn't necessarily mean that I was more productive than the one asking the question. It just meant that I was perhaps better at filling all of my available time with "stuff."
I've been guilty of often saying that I just don't have enough time in the day to accomplish everything I want or need to do. I found an interesting resource for a planner and thinking that might make me more productive, I did some investigating. The Monk Manual (https://www.monkmanual.com) was designed using the spiritual insights of St. Benedict and his directions for daily living for the monks in his Order. It focuses on core qualities that, when practiced, lead to a better daily experience, a better life, and increased productivity.
The process starts with the PAR Method - Prepare, Act, and Reflect. In each one of those areas, the goal is to focus and implement Gratitude, Awareness, Intentional Action, Presence, Personal Growth, Giving, Listening, and Loving. Is it a perfect system? No. Is it worth investigating? For me, yes - because those qualities are ones that need real improvement in my life. The goal is progress - not perfection. Small steps, one at a time, can cover a lot of ground. Here is what intrigued me the most:
"Monks are the most productive people in the world. They know that productivity isn't about doing more things, it's about doing the most important things well. As foreign as the way of a monk may seem, it turns out to be a highly practical path to a fulfilled life."
So, I ordered the manual and am waiting on its arrival. I will keep you posted on how I do and what I find. And, I am trying to truthfully answer that ubiquitous question on how things are with me. It's important to acknowledge that the real reason an "important" task is not getting done is because I choose to focus on tasks which are less important. And it is even more important for us to focus on those things which truly matter - gratitude, awareness, giving, listening, loving.
What can I do for you today that will allow you to focus on doing what's really important in your life? I'm here to help....
Have a great day!!!
