What makes a successful marketing team?

Marketing campaigns are constantly evolving and improving. Adaptability to change and an ability to pivot are essential. What worked in your industry a year ago may not be the best way forward today.

Consistently showing up and continuing to learn are the difference between a good marketing effort and a great one. A campaign that performs well may be able to perform better, and consistent optimizations paired with continuous learning are the keys to long- term growth.

Open communication between Sales and Marketing internally, and external communication with your company’s audience define how you advertise your brand and your products.

Effectively communicating to the public what your product can accomplish starts and continues with knowing both your consumer’s perspective and how your sales team navigate a sale.

Great marketers put consistency, adaptability and communication first. They show up, listen to other perspectives, and are constantly continuing their educations.

Don’t tell your audience what your product can do. Show it in action.

Range Rover’s ‘giant speed bump’ ad is impactful with its audience because you can see the difference between what a Range Rover can accomplish versus a sedan or small SUV.

Specifications and written case studies can break down the over-time savings, increases in production or overall efficiency of a product, but nothing drives the message home like seeing the product in its element.

Working as an ethical marketer can sometimes SUCK.

I love supporting my clients. I love showing them what sustainable success can look like for their business. I love the way we grow into a true team through working together and constant, honest communication.

But just like not every marketer is ethical...neither is every client.

And it hurts when you come to see that the client you have trusted and grown from the ground up does not have the same standards of ethics and human decency that you do.

I not only had to walk away from a client. I had to end a friendship. Honesty, a genuine care that you do the right thing... those things are not negotiable. Not for me.

We do our best. We work with kindness. We do not spread hate.

No matter how we might feel about a client's actions.

We walk away. The ethical clients, the ones that will change the world? They're waiting for us. It's just as well this client showed their true colours. Now I can help someone else make the world a better place.

Disc Golf made me look at my client’s product in a whole new light, and it changed everything.

It all started with a client’s product, a wind indicator that was perfect for testing the wind direction on hunting trips, as well as with uses in HVAC (checking for leaks/ drafts) and K9 work.

When I first came on board, these markets were what the client had been focusing on building for years. We were seeing results, but not enough.

Did you see that time that Tiger Woods’ golf caddie tested the wind by blowing his cigarette in the air?

Thus, we found an alternative market for our product. The wind indicator emits a vapour from a bellows system, allowing you to see wind speed and direction. This changes the game for golfers and disc golfers (professional and amateur alike).

Every time I take my version of the product on the greens with me, my disc golf buddies are so intrigued.

“That’s so much better than tossing grass in the air!”

“Now I don’t have to waste my favourite chalk to test the wind!”

It’s a $90 product, and as soon as we introduced it to the disc golf community, it became a hit. Our concerns that amateurs would balk at the cost were immediately assuaged because it solved their problem: how and where to throw.

Understanding your product is one thing, knowing who it can help may be another. There could be a whole untapped audience out there for your business.

But today, I’m thankful for Tiger Woods letting his caddy blow smoke!

My husband and I were in a car accident last Friday. While our car was totalled, we were lucky to walk away with bruises and cracked ribs. I had a mild concussion. I took the weekend off, and tried to work on Monday. I couldn’t look at my screen, and my insides crawled at the thought of missing work, but I needed to. And I still needed to on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday…

It’s Friday morning and I’m fighting on my client’s behalf. I feel more focused than I have in seven days. But everything still hurts, and it’s taking longer to get things done than usual.

I’ve spent seven days torturing myself for taking a week off. My clients understand, they’ve been injured. I think it’s a lesson we struggle with as business owners, that when we need to step away for our health or our family it’s okay to do so. My husband needed me, and I needed him and rest.

I am so thankful to be back at work. And I’m ready to help if you need me.
