In humid climates, best practice is to connect a whole-house dehumidifier to the HVAC system’s supply plenum rather than the return, preventing re-evaporation at the coil and preserving the air conditioner’s latent performance. The dehumidifier discharge should be tied in downstream of the evaporator coil, typically 12–24 inches away, to allow airflow to stabilize and avoid impacting coil operation. A backdraft damper is required in the dehumidifier supply duct to prevent reverse airflow. For proper mixing of the warm, dry air with conditioned supply air, maintain at least two duct diameters of straight duct between the dehumidifier connection and the first supply takeoff. In many cases, especially retrofits, this means extending or even doubling the plenum length. Done correctly, this setup delivers more consistent humidity control, improves system efficiency, and ensures the dehumidifier and AC system work together—not against each other.
