Understanding thermoregulation is very important in preventing health issues in extreme wether conditions.

Thermoregulation refers to the horse's ability to regulate body temperatures. These temperatures are on average around 100°F give or take a degree depending on your individual horse and the time of day at which the body temperature is taken.

Messages are sent through nerves, parts of the spinal cord, skin receptors, deep skeletal muscles and the abdomen to the hypothalamus of the brain which plays an important roll in regulating body environment particularly body temperatures, blood pressure and circadian rhythm.

The horse can deal with overheating in 4 ways...

1) Evaporation: this is when the body effectively sweats excessive sweating may lead to dehydration. However, sweating in itself is a good thing when not in excess.

2) Convection: this is when the heated air from the horses skin rises and then is replaced by cooler air.

3) Radiation: is when the capillaries just beneath the skin widen known as vasodilation resulting in a transfer of blood into the dermal regions allowing some of the heat to escape from the body.

4) Conduction: this is when body heat transfers to cool water. The horse may lay down in a pool of water or you may wash your horse down with cool water to help cool the body. The cooler the water the more effective the conduction process is in removing heat from the body.

The horse can flex his back up and down as he chooses. This however typically is the result to a natural response. A dropped back typically means the horse is in a self preservation mindset thus becoming more spooky and difficult to handle. A back that is lifted or upwardly flexed keeps the mind in a neutral or relaxed mindset. This comes from the signals the brain is sending and receiving through the nervous system. Specifically the nerves in the back.

Fascia is a connective tissue and extends throughout the body as an uninterrupted web. It's a tissue that surrounds, intertwines and even permeates every bone, muscle and organ. This allows it to operate as one homogenous unit. Needless to say fascia is an important part of the anatomical system and if compromised can cause serious issues for the horse in his daily life.

Keeping fascia moist helps the structures move fluidly and with comfort. Equine bodywork helps keep fascia healthy along with proper muscle use and development, diet and many other factors.
