Families, be sure you all weigh the pros and cons of the choices about in-state, out-of-state tuition, college fit, the cost of attendance, and making comparisons. Unfortunately, most students (and their parents) don’t take heed with regard to planning how to pay for college until senior year.

Tyrone McMillian, a junior at Morehouse College, has merit-based scholarships to help him cover some of his college costs. Yet, he's already taken on more than $60,000 in student loans to cover tuition at the private HBCU.

"I'm still tussling with the fact that I'm spending money that I don't have to attend college," he said.
