How much should a website really cost? Why does one company quote you $5K and another $50K?

There are ways to get websites done reasonably well for $2K, $5K, whatever. Where I live is on the other end of the spectrum, $30K to $50K plus.

What fills the gap is all the decisions that go into the final product. Ask what levers determine the pricing. Sometimes a more affordable option is the right call.

AI is genuinely great at producing pounds and pounds of mediocre work.

To be clear, I'm a heavy proponent of using AI. What I don't promote is using it as a way to be lazy.

It buys you time. Don't pocket that as speed. Reinvest it into specificity and quality.

There's nothing wrong with a client who just wants hands. It just isn't what we're built for.

When the feedback is visceral instead of strategic, you end up guessing at taste. Which means you can't defend your work. And the complaint becomes "why is this taking so long" instead of "is this good."

The money was decent. That's not the cost.

I identify as shy and introverted. I've run sales for about two decades.

What got me through wasn't becoming someone else. It was telling the truth, including about the places where we're weak.

Oddly, the thing I'd have called a weakness is what builds the deeper relationships.

On a sales call, someone says "we're going to make the best thing on the internet."

We meant we'd present existing functionality better. The client heard a fully custom build.

Nobody caught it until we were three quarters through. We ended up essentially paying the client to let us do the work.

Clients never get mad about paying for extra, as long as they understand the boundaries up front.

When I audit a brand, what I usually see is a megaphone. All about them, instead of the people they're serving.

The test: could a stranger look at your site and work out who you help, what situation they're in, and why you're the one to solve it?

If they can't, your positioning is weak.

I really feel like we just hit a tipping point with AI adoption.

I talk to a ton of people in a given week, and everyone is building now. Not just using AI. Building real, useful things.

Business is changing. If you want to compete, you need a team full of AI builders.

Why you keep losing to competitors you know you’re better than

You’re sure you’re the better choice, and you keep losing to someone cheaper or worse. The reflex is to blame the sales team or the price. But a lot of the time the deal was decided long before anyone got on a call, and that’s a positioning problem, not a sales one.

If you write your content with AI, AI probably won’t cite it.

If you’re using AI to write your content, you might be making yourself invisible to AI. Models cite the specific, earned things the average article leaves out, and that is the part you have to put back in.

Stop making design decisions based on taste

When a design decision comes down to whoever has the strongest opinion in the room, the most senior person wins and the business loses. The fix isn't better taste. It's three questions every design choice should answer first.
