THE WEDGE OF TECHNOLOGY

We're in a unique transition in our culture. People are becoming more and more separated as technology is developed to automate human interactions.

This slowly shrinks our opportunities for authentic engagement. And when the need for one-on-one human interaction occurs, here we are, under-conditioned to deliver a genuine experience.

Our nerves play a factor, confidence waivers ever so slightly as we scramble to think on our feet and at least appear confident. How we signal our message trends into ambiguity and becomes subject to misinterpretation.

This isn't an anti-technology rant, however tempting it is to go down that road for me. The truth is, technology is both a blessing and a curse; things get done faster but end-users actually have more work thrust upon them. When was the last time someone pumped your gas, checked your oil, and washed your windows all in one stop?

Pursuant to my 15 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting Hired, I want to expand on each of those 15. Here's some thoughts on reason #1, Don’t customize your resume for each job opportunity.
I can’t tell you how many clients ask for a “general” resume. I then have to change their thinking using my “bullet analogy.” Arrows work too but the point is, as sleek as a bullet or arrow looks, it only serves its purpose when it is aimed at a specific target.

That’s how a resume truly works, it must be fine-tuned to speak to the needs of the job. It’s simple. The person reading your resume has a problem. If your resume shows you as the solution, you’ll get an interview.

There’s a trap people fall into when they think “general resume.” It feels efficient, it saves money and time. But this is NOT the time to hit the EASY button. If you want that job, if it’s the right fit for you, if you know beyond any doubt that you can do it, then it’s going to take a focused effort to go after it. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy so why would a person think dropping a same-same resume into the abyss of applicants is going to work. I bet they habitually buy lottery tickets too because that’s exactly what this becomes, a game of self-sabotaging chance.

Only you can change your circumstance but often, change needs help. That's where I come in - the coach in your corner.

15 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting Hired

2. Use an AI generated cover letter.
3. Exaggerate your skills and experience.
4. Drop off a resume in person.
5. Neglect to have your resume & cover letter proof-read.
6. Using onboard audio-visual from you laptop for virtual interviewing.
7. Listing references from whom you hadn’t asked.
8. Let nerves get the better of you.
9. Don’t prepare for the interview.
10. Improvising your responses in the interview.
11. Missing non-verbal cues.
12. Letting invitation for an interview sit for more than a day.
13. Negotiating before, or over-negotiating after, an offer.
14. Negotiating in bad faith.
15. Letting rejection become an emotional issue.

Tip for today. Click the ‘on’ switch on your private dashboard to let recruiters know you’re open to opportunities (this isn’t visible to the rest of your network). Make sure to include a note (you get 300 characters to do so) in the dashboard that tells the recruiter a bit about the roles you are targeting and how you are an ideal fit. Following target companies will increase your chances of getting HR to reach out.

Recruiters are scrambling to fill talent gaps, while desirable candidates often have multiple job offers and the ability to choose an employment brand that best suits them.
