The internet doesn't forget - and neither do employers.

Social media screening exists because what people share publicly is real, it's visible, and it matters. A single post can say more about someone's character than anything on a resume.

In the world we live in now, your online presence is part of your professional profile whether you think of it that way or not. Treat it accordingly.

The world we live in now looks a lot different than it did even five years ago, and hiring has had to keep up.

Social media isn't going anywhere. It's where people share their opinions, their lifestyle, and sometimes things they probably shouldn't. And increasingly, it's part of how organizations get a fuller picture of who they're bringing in.

Background checks and social media screening together aren't about invading anyone's privacy. They're about making informed decisions in a world where more information is publicly available than ever before. Be mindful of what you put out there - because it has a way of following you.

The 7-year background check myth is one of the most misunderstood things in hiring - and it's worth clearing up.

Certain information has reporting limitations under federal law, but that doesn't mean your record resets after 7 years. Older records don't automatically disappear just because time has passed.

If you want something removed from your record, expungement is the process that actually does that. Time alone doesn't.

Thousands of applicants doesn't mean thousands of good candidates.

When the volume gets that high, it's usually a signal worth paying attention to, not just about how many people are applying, but about whether the process is attracting the right ones. Clear requirements, targeted questions, and intentional friction upfront can do a lot of the work before a single resume hits your desk.

Better filtering at the top makes everything else easier.

No one should have to write a rule that says don't watch Netflix during work hours. And yet, here we are.

When your list of workplace policies starts to read like a list of things that should go without saying, it's worth asking how those situations came to be in the first place.

Hiring the right people from the start means fewer rules nobody should have needed to make.

HR isn't there to hear you complain - but they are there to help you resolve real issues.

The difference between a complaint and a concern is how you present it. Come in with specifics, stay solution-focused, and frame things around impact rather than emotion. That's the language HR responds to.

How you say it is just as important as what you say.

We surveyed over 150 companies around the country and asked them:

"How satisfied are you with your background screening provider?"

The answers describe something the category doesn't talk about.

3 in 5 are unhappy.

4 in 5 stay anyway because they feel stuck.

Find out why companies feel stuck and why they're unhappy.

We surveyed 150+ companies. 3 in 5 companies are unhappy with their screening provider. Almost all feel lied to (and stuck in their contract).

That's not a small problem. That's an industry pattern.

We documented it.

A background check isn't designed to catch you off guard - but if you've been dishonest on your resume, it's going to look that way.

The process exists to verify what you've claimed. And when what you've claimed doesn't match what's on record, that's not the background check working against you. That's just the truth showing up on schedule.

Honesty upfront saves everyone the trouble - including you.

A background check is a data report. It reflects a moment, not a person. And treating it as the final word on someone's character leaves out everything that actually matters - context, growth, and who they are today.

That's exactly why giving people the opportunity to tell their story isn't just good practice. It's the difference between screening and judging.
