GRECs are geothermal heat pump (GHP) renewable energy credits. Renewable energy credits are purchased by industries to pollute to avoid fines.

The GHP owner received some of this money. Why?

Not only are geo heat pumps emission-free ( no on-site air pollution, including GHGs) but they lower peak demand. Demand reduction is the Holy Grail of electric utilities. It saves $ for every ratepayer, not just the homeowner.

Electric heat pumps (both air source and ground source) are 2-5 times more efficient than fossil fuel heating systems. So even though electric prices can be high, electricity is less volatile than fossil fuels.

Considering heat pumps both heat and cool, you don’t need a separate air conditioner.
