Recently a young follower of Spirit & Space shared a great online article focused on the benefits of recycling clothing. From reducing the landfill and greenhouse gases to helping those less fortunate, donating your unwanted clothing just makes sense.

Recently a dear friend reached out to tell me about a downsizing success story. She and her wife are avid basketball fans who used to live in Houston.

“We are going through boxes and boxes of photographs and memorabilia so our nieces and nephews don’t have to deal with it. We have lots of WNBA memorabilia including signed T-shirts, basketballs, and jerseys from the Houston Comets. Knowing that MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston has a special area for kids with cancer called Kim’s Place, in memory of Comets’ player Kim Perrot, we contacted them to ask if they would want any of our memorabilia. They were ecstatic!! On a recent trip to Houston we took everything and donated it to them. We were thrilled to find a place that would appreciate our stuff.”

Their story highlights two important ideas associated with downsizing: First, Beth and Marla are taking responsibility for the process while they can, so they don’t burden family members later. Secondly, they found a fabulous donation solution for collectibles they no longer want or need.

Thanks for sharing, Beth and Marla! It’s always easier to let go when you know someone else will appreciate your belongings! Congratulations on a job well done.

Singing the Praises of RecycleForce for Electronics Recycling

A cleaner environment. A stronger workforce.

RecycleForce is an employment social enterprise that provides returning citizens with job training through electronics recycling. They are committed to reducing crime through employment and job training while improving the environment through electronics recycling.

In addition to their main facility at 816 N. Sherman Drive, they have a 24/7 drop off on the north side of Indy at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street (just west of Meridian Street). Look for the yellow shipping container on the north side of the parking lot.

Not in Indy? Look for options for recycling electronics in your area to keep them out of the landfill!

“What is ‘collectibles advising’ and how does it work?” a new client asked last week. She was surprised by the answer, as she had no idea that collectibles advising was even a thing. These days it’s a significant part of how Spirit & Space helps our clients.

The primary job of a collectibles advisor is to help clients identify and sell items of value. Items routinely surface through organizing, decluttering, and downsizing; often clients aren’t even aware that their unwanted items could be sold. Some clients schedule dedicated collectibles consultations, separate from any organizing services.

“Collectibles” is a loose term. The variety of items we’ve sold for clients is very broad, from vintage to contemporary, décor to personal items and everything in between. Selling options include more than 50 local dealers, auctions, national partners, Facebook Marketplace, and targeted solutions for unique items.

Generally speaking, the most lucrative items coming out of houses these days are jewelry, silver and coins, and we work with these materials extensively. But the items we sell don’t always have high value; we’ve sold fine jewelry for eye-popping prices and vintage items such as hankies and irons for just a few bucks. Each sale puts an item in new hands, allowing someone else to enjoy it.

With so many people downsizing these days, the market is flooded with inventory. Sometimes we must explain that an item isn’t as valuable as the client thinks it is and won’t garner much on the secondary market. In that case, we frequently identify appropriate donation options.

Here are the numbers for a recent week that was especially packed with collectibles work:

-1 trip to Everything But The House (EBTH), a global auction in Cincinnati, delivering items for 13 clients
-2 boxes of jew=elry shipped to a California dealer
-3 boxes of coins shipped to a top dealer in the industry
-5 nonprofit donations
-8 collectibles-related appointments
-13 more clients served by deliveries to 17 dealers (and 2 Facebook buyers)

Storage Ideas, Anyone?

Spirit & Space associates routinely help clients use space more effectively and organize items in a way that best suits their needs. Sometimes we identify storage products that make the most of a space, allowing a client to see and access items more easily.
