“I don’t want to do it; I want my kids to do it when I’m gone.”

So said a participant at one of my senior downsizing presentations. The woman said the prospect of downsizing was overwhelming. I agree; it can be!

But there were others at the program who were relishing the process of downsizing, enjoying finding homes for their special belongings, and looking forward to managing a simpler life.

Downsizing brings up so many emotions! For seniors, the process often coincides with a time when physical ability and energy are more limited. To say the least, it can be a difficult process.

Everyone always feels like they have plenty of time for planning at this stage, but life can change on a dime. It’s almost never too early to plan and start the process. A friend of mine says her motto was “Better five years too early than one day too late!” I always encourage seniors to start the process well before a move, allowing more time than they think they’ll need.

In Embracing Conscious Simplicity, authors Barbara Bougher and Teresa Worthington note that when we are intentional about simplifying life, we appreciate what we have more:

“When we make the conscious choice to have only what we love, what we use, and what brings beauty into our life; when we are not bogged down with that which has outlived its purpose in our life, we make room to welcome in new and wonderful experiences that embody the life we are living now or the life we want to create for our self. Our life feels richer, freer, more blessed, more beautiful, and more meaningful.”

Aging adults can choose to be intentional about their belongings, taking responsibility for sorting and purging items they no longer need, use or want. Some have friends and family members who are willing to help. Spirit & Space clients appreciate guidance and coaching for the process, as well as extra hands and feet for the daunting task of finding new homes for things.

But oh the peace that comes from not being burdened with stuff! That’s something to relish.

At the time of this post, I’ll be on retreat with The Society of St. John the Evangelist, an order of Episcopal monks who have a monastery and guest house on the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge, MA.

I’ve been retreating with these Brothers for more than 20 years now; between my visits to their retreat centers and their online presence (including a daily reflection sent by email with links to sermons), their impact on my life has been profound.

Why retreat? It is an intentional respite for quiet, calm, prayer, rest, and time with God. It is foundational to my spiritual life.

At the guest house I’ll stay in a “cell” that is small, sparse but comfortable, with a window overlooking the river. I love to sit at the table by the window to journal.

The Brothers have a wonderful ministry of hospitality; I’ll join them in worship and eat delicious meals in the dining hall (mostly in silence). I look forward to long walks, naps, quiet, and beautiful music in the chapel. My favorite service is Compline, sung at 8:30 before settling down for the night.

Added bonus: one of my dearest friends in the world will be on retreat at the same time; she’ll be a wonderful companion on walks and in silence alike.

With Spirit & Space I seek to lift others’ spirits and help them find greater satisfaction with their spaces, “creating joy one organized space at a time.” Being at SSJE lifts my spirits and brings me joy, filling my cup so that I can return to work refreshed, grounded, and energized for the work ahead.

Clients and friends have asked how they can help people find Spirit & Space. Referrals! It’s a great way to connect us with terrific people who could use our services. Well over half of our clients come to us through referrals.

A simple conversation, text message, social media post, or recommendation in a local community group can introduce someone to services that could genuinely improve their daily life. If you have directly benefited from our services, it helps to mention specific results you noticed, such as reduced stress, improved routines, more functional spaces, or how supported and comfortable you felt throughout the process.

Consider sharing about Spirit & Space if you hear…

-A friend complaining about how stressed they are by their clutter

-A busy parent talking about needing a system to keep track of kids’ stuff

-A neighbor seeking help to declutter before a move

-An older adult planning to downsize and needing help with the physical process of purging

If you’ve had a positive experience, sharing that experience with friends, family, coworkers, or neighbors who may feel overwhelmed by clutter or disorganization can make a real difference.

Dorothy knew that home was more than the stuff under the roof; it was about the people she loved, and the place where she knew she was loved.

Ideally home is where you can relax most deeply, where you are the most emotionally secure, where you can “let down your hair” and truly be yourself.

Living with clutter has a negative impact on your ability to relax and feel peaceful at home. Piles of stuff, unorganized belongings, items that have no home, not being able to find things – all of it prevents you from relaxing. It adds to your stress level, depletes your energy, and limits your ability to enjoy time with family and friends.

But here’s the thing: there’s no “right” way to organize. One person’s organization might look different from mine but work just fine for them.

As a professional organizer, it’s not my job to impose my style of organization on my clients. My job is to listen to their needs, work together to find their organizational style, and create systems that work for them.

Some people have tried to live up to others’ expectations for organizing, only to feel (or be called) lazy and messy; their lack of self confidence in organizing prompts them to give up trying altogether.

But once we find their own organizational style, we can create systems that enable them to keep things tidy in a way that works for them.

Get your calm back. Let’s explore how Spirit & Space can help you declutter, organize, and restore peace in your home.

At the April party we hit a new high: one person walked away with a check for over $17,000.
mostly for gold jewelry that was her mother's.

We have 3 more parties on the books so far this year, including one in Philadelphia in June.
