Sand or Topsoil? Here’s the Answer Every Homeowner Gets Wrong

If you’ve ever wondered what to put on your lawn to help it fill in and grow better, the answer is topsoil and only topsoil. Not sand, not compost, and definitely not some mix of all three.

The reason is simple. Topsoil is there to add nutrients to your lawn, not to level it out. A lot of people make the mistake of throwing down sand thinking it will smooth things out, but that’s not what your grass needs. Your lawn needs nutrients to thrive, and topsoil is what delivers that.

Sand does nothing for nutrition. Compost can be unpredictable depending on what’s in it. Mixing products together throws off the balance. Stick with straight topsoil and your lawn will thank you.

The Best Time to Fight Dandelions Is Now

If dandelions show up in your yard every single year, there is a reason.

One dandelion can make over 2,000 seeds a year, and those seeds float in the wind, so nearly every lawn gets them. Pulling them helps less than you would think. Pull the top and the long taproot often stays behind and regrows.

Whether those seeds actually sprout depends on how healthy your lawn is, and fall is the best time to control perennial w**ds like dandelions.
