You can’t go wrong with a good rewards card credit card, especially a cash back rewards card. Travel rewards are pretty good too if you like to travel.

If a collection agency has been silent for a while and then they suddenly start calling you, sending letters, throw an old debt on your credit report, or
Worse, serve you with lawsuit papers, it’s not a coincidence. Something happened that made think you’re in a position to pay or that your more likely to pay.

Some try to sue you right before the statue of limitations runs out hoping they can get a judgment against you and extend the time they can collect from you. Unfortunately, with a judgment, agencies have more options for getting you to pay and you don’t have the same tools you had before. Don’t ignore a lawsuit summons. Contact an attorney if you are served with papers so you can answer properly and defend yourself.

You don’t have to carry a balance to have excellent credit. Get familiar with your statement closing date and due date.

Many creditors will still report a negative account status for a charge off each month if it hasn’t been sold or assigned to a collection agency ( or cancelled/discharged).

An account gets charged off after 180 days or six months of missed payments. Most people who haven’t had a charge off (or don’t work in a bank) don’t know this. Unfortunately, a charge- off is typically a done deal. You can’t catch up on payments to bring your account current again.
