The New Year is upon us. Some of us are getting promoted, some getting voted into an Officer Position. Biggest thing we all need to remember is that we all started somewhere. We all rode that back step. Don’t forget that, don’t forget you promised and told people if you ever became a Boss you wouldn’t be like that last one. The Boss who forgot where they came from and why they wanted it. This is your year, this is the year you make us a stronger family and hold true to our best tradition of all in the Fire Service. The Tradition of Honor.

15 years ago tonight we would sit down for a meal. Little did we know it would be the last meal for 2 members. “THIS COULD BE THE NIGHT “is real in the fire service. Be INTO THE JOB your life could depend on it.

Good Officers believe in there companies knowledge and trust them to get the job done. When you have trust you wouldn’t need to micromanage, instead all that would be needed were clear orders. Orders would be telling the company “Truck 3, check for extension on the second floor.” Micromanagement would be “Truck 3, go to the second floor, with tools flashlights, TIC and open up. If you find fire, make sure you request an engine company for a line.” Your companies and the crew should know the basic items needed to check for extension or whatever kind of task assigned. We all have new FF’s or Officers who might not know what to do. If they don’t know how to operate at a fire, it’s not all on them. It’s also on the higher ranking personnel of that company or department that failed to properly train the personal. Did you go over SOP’s/SOG’s of the departments and how we work on a scene. Who’s more at fault, the one who failed, or the one who set you up for failure.

In your mind what is full. Not your Department Standards, your personal standard on Bottles being full. First Day Checks are so important. Maybe before you get your cup of coffee, you read the paper, before talk about last nights game. Maybe you should check your bottle. Someone once said to me the first 4,000 is for you, the last 500 is for your family.

This image is the image you want to see after every fire. Everyone helps out, think about that for a second. EVERYONE, that means the person to the left and to the right of you is going home to their families. Because you worked as a team from the beginning all the way to the last coupling. They are living another day to do a job they love. We work together and we fight together. Enjoy these moments, these are the moments that bring us closer. Notice the Chiefs in the line. To those Chiefs, Salute next round on me brothers. Flow and Vent

Side by side comparison of Shooting vs. Traditional. The guys who shot the extension ladder were opening up before the crew with the extension/roof ladders. The shooting was venting the roof before the other crews hooks were even set... to quote Chief Rinewalt “when seconds count, we count seconds” 📸 .

(Stop looking at this just for the pitch and saying it’s walkable. We get that and understand that. It’s the tactic if there was a hard pitch. Also some departments no matter what you have to work on a ladder, if you can’t cut from it, you can go up it)
