***** WEATHER UPDATE *****

The biggest issue we are currently facing is not the weather anymore, but the large amount of drift and debris that has been carried into the river by flash flooding from creeks and streams. As shown in the photos below, logs, limbs, and other debris are moving through the channel.

The ferry ramps have been cleared however, operating through this amount of debris creates a significant risk of damage to the ferry’s paddle wheel and cable system. This is not something we can safely or reasonably push through without risking costly damage and an extended outage to the tax payers.

As it stands right now it is unlikely we will be able to operate at all today. If something were to change I’ll make an update but it looks unlikely.

***** UPDATE *****

IF YOU ALL WILL INDULGE ME FOR A MINUTE.

As some of you are aware we used inmate labor at one time on the ferry. When an inmate would successfully complete his sentence and was going to be released on parole I would write them a letter of recommendation, give them a cheap flip cell phone and a cashiers check for $100.00 to help them get on their feet again. Some would keep in touch, some would not.
I received news tonight that Bobby M, a chef by training and a former deck hand has passed away. I would always have him cook the lunch meal and during high water he would make coffee and we would chew the fat before taking him back to the detention center. We never lost touch after he got out and completed probation, he always talked about how kind the passengers were to him and that he missed some of you and the words of encouragement you all gave him, particularly Brother Walter and Capt. David Sanders. He got his life sorted out, contributed to society and passed away with his children around him. Godspeed Bobby, it was a pleasure having you aboard. Clayton
