It appears that there is a Spectrum outage effecting our internet and phone lines. Spectrum hasn’t given me any ideas about when the service will be back up. Our service has been completely out since yesterday afternoon. As a result, we cannot receive phone calls or send emails. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Several clients have received an IRS notice to update banking information to get a refund when they were not due a refund. The IRS is acknowledging some notices may have went out in error and to disregard until further notice.

Taxpayers and practitioners are unsure whether the CP53E notices they have received are scams or simply sent in error, a confusion heightened by the inclusion of a QR code.

Governor McMaster has signed H.4216 into law.

🚨 This bill does not impact 2025 Income Tax returns. It goes into effect beginning with the 2026 tax year, with returns due April 15, 2027.

💡 How does H.4216 impact Individual Income Tax rates?

Under this bill:
→ The tax rate for income less than $30,000 is 1.99%.
→ The tax rate for income from $30,000 and above is 5.21%, minus $966.

The top tax rate will be further reduced if the Board of Economic Advisors projects that revenue collections will increase by 5+% from the previous year.

💡 How does H.4216 impact deductions?

→ South Carolina is decoupled from federal standard and itemized deductions. A new SC Income Adjusted Deduction will be used in place of the federal standard deduction.

We have almost made it to the end of tax season. Wednesday is April 15. If you have gotten a call recently or if you get one tomorrow, please try to get to my office to pickup your return as soon as possible. On Wednesday, we will be leaving the office as soon as all returns and extensions have been filed. Please do not make us wait on you. We are tired. I am beginning extensions tomorrow since that will take at least 2 days to complete. I have completed all returns brought into my office March 23 or prior with very few exceptions and some that have come in later as time has permitted. If your information came in after March 23 and you do not receive a call, an extension will be filed. Thank you all for another successful tax season.

Reminder: If you have investment accounts (Wells Fargo, Edward Jones, Charles Schwab), please check your online accounts for your consolidated 1099 forms. Most of these companies encourage paperless options and that includes your annual tax forms.

This is only for STATE returns. The federal is offering no automatic extension.

📣 We know people may need additional time to file this tax season, so we’re extending the April 15 deadline for SC taxpayers. Here’s what’s happening ⬇️

The SC Legislature is currently working on a bill to conform with the current Internal Revenue Code, including the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

We know people have questions about how this might impact them. If it passes, we’ll provide more information as soon as possible—including guidance for people who have already filed.

In the meantime, we’re automatically extending the deadline for all 2025 SC Individual Income Tax returns to October 15.

→ You don’t need to take any action to take advantage of this extension.
→ The extension applies only to filing your state return, not your federal return.
→ If you owe taxes, you’re still required to pay by April 15.

These will work very similar to a retirement account but they are for children. If you have a child between 2025-2028, you can elect to get $1000 deposited by the government into a New Trump account.

The e-filing of tax returns will begin on January 26.

The announced Monday, January 26, 2026, as the opening of the nation’s 2026 filing season. You will have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file your 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. Don’t forget that IRS.gov has online tools and resources you can use before, during and after filing your federal tax return. IRS Accounts

The federal and state agencies are becoming more and more difficult to get information from. The most efficient way to get information from the IRS is now electronically. You can get transcripts, make payments, and get a lot of information regarding your tax account without having to call the IRS with an IRS account.

The creation of these accounts give me more ability to help you solve tax issues as well. You can approve requests to allow me to act as your power of attorney if necessary. This saves me a lot of time on the phone. Typical calls to the IRS take 2 hours on average (including hold time).

I’m encouraging all of my clients to create an IRS and MyDORWAY account (SC residents). Yes, it’s a little bit aggravating during the creation process. You need picture ID, an email address, and a smartphone.

DO NOT ALLOW THIRD PARTY companies to help you create accounts. If you need help creating your account, contact my office. Do not trust people that may call you and offer to assist with the creation of these accounts for a fee. I may charge you but at least your information is secure. These calls are spam calls.

Let’s talk about paper checks vs electronic payment methods.

As of September 30, 2025, the IRS has begun to phase out the issuance of paper checks for refunds. I will say that MOST of my clients already provide their banking information to get any federal or state tax refunds.

Another phase of this executive action to reduce paper checks issued by the IRS is to stop accepting paper checks as payment. A date hasn’t officially been announced but expect it to begin in the next filing season.

What this means is that if you OWE taxes (federal or state) and you are not already paying them electronically, you are going to have to start. There are a few ways to accomplish this. For the IRS, your options are:

1. Allow us to draft with the return and schedule your estimates. (preferred method)
2. Go to www.irs.gov and select “Make a Payment”
3. Apply for an EFTPS pin and make any payments using EFTPS and the special pin you receive. (The pin is linked to your bank account)

Your options for making state payments are very similar. We can draft or you can use MyDORWAY to make payments.

I know some people are hesitant to pay electronically or to allow us to draft their tax payments with the filing of the returns but you will know the amounts and dates before the return is filed.

If you want to pay with installments on your own, you just need to make sure you are initiating these payments electronically rather than sending checks. Any correspondence from federal or state agencies asking for payments include QR codes that will take you to the website you can use for payments.
