IRS Accounts

The federal and state agencies are becoming more and more difficult to get information from. The most efficient way to get information from the IRS is now electronically. You can get transcripts, make payments, and get a lot of information regarding your tax account without having to call the IRS with an IRS account.

The creation of these accounts give me more ability to help you solve tax issues as well. You can approve requests to allow me to act as your power of attorney if necessary. This saves me a lot of time on the phone. Typical calls to the IRS take 2 hours on average (including hold time).

I’m encouraging all of my clients to create an IRS and MyDORWAY account (SC residents). Yes, it’s a little bit aggravating during the creation process. You need picture ID, an email address, and a smartphone.

DO NOT ALLOW THIRD PARTY companies to help you create accounts. If you need help creating your account, contact my office. Do not trust people that may call you and offer to assist with the creation of these accounts for a fee. I may charge you but at least your information is secure. These calls are spam calls.

Let’s talk about paper checks vs electronic payment methods.

As of September 30, 2025, the IRS has begun to phase out the issuance of paper checks for refunds. I will say that MOST of my clients already provide their banking information to get any federal or state tax refunds.

Another phase of this executive action to reduce paper checks issued by the IRS is to stop accepting paper checks as payment. A date hasn’t officially been announced but expect it to begin in the next filing season.

What this means is that if you OWE taxes (federal or state) and you are not already paying them electronically, you are going to have to start. There are a few ways to accomplish this. For the IRS, your options are:

1. Allow us to draft with the return and schedule your estimates. (preferred method)
2. Go to www.irs.gov and select “Make a Payment”
3. Apply for an EFTPS pin and make any payments using EFTPS and the special pin you receive. (The pin is linked to your bank account)

Your options for making state payments are very similar. We can draft or you can use MyDORWAY to make payments.

I know some people are hesitant to pay electronically or to allow us to draft their tax payments with the filing of the returns but you will know the amounts and dates before the return is filed.

If you want to pay with installments on your own, you just need to make sure you are initiating these payments electronically rather than sending checks. Any correspondence from federal or state agencies asking for payments include QR codes that will take you to the website you can use for payments.

This likely means paper refund checks are no longer an option in the upcoming tax season. While most people already get their refunds via direct deposit it appears that paper checks are now a thing of the past. #1 cited reason was fraud and theft. This means SENDING them checks is likely going to be the next thing to go. Electronic payments only.

IRS STOPS PAPER REFUND CHECKS

The Internal Revenue Service, working with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, today announced that paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers will be phased out beginning on Sept. 30, 2025, as required by Executive Order 14247, to the extent permitted by law. This marks the first step of the broader transition to electronic payments.

The IRS will publish detailed guidance for 2025 tax returns before the 2026 filing season begins. Until further notice, taxpayers should continue using existing forms and procedures, including those filing their 2024 returns on extension of a due date prior to Dec. 31, 2025.

The change is designed to:
• Protect taxpayers: Paper checks are over 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or delayed than electronic payments. Direct deposit also avoids the possibility that a refund check could be returned to the IRS as undeliverable.
• Speed up refunds: Electronic refunds give taxpayers faster access to refunds, with payments issued in less than 21 days if filing electronically, choosing direct deposit and there are no issues with the return, whereas nonelectronic payments may take 6 weeks or longer for refunds sent by mail.
• Cut costs: Electronic payments are more efficient and cost less than paper.

What this means for individual taxpayers:
• Filing stays the same: Taxpayers should continue to file their returns as they normally would, using one of the existing filing options.
• Refunds go digital: Most refunds will be delivered by direct deposit or other secure electronic methods.
Help for those without access to bank accounts: Options such as prepaid debit cards, digital wallets or limited exceptions will be available.
• Act now: Taxpayers should make sure they know their banking information or consider opening a free or low-cost account. Visit FDIC: GetBanked and MyCreditUnion.gov for account options.

Most individual taxpayers already receive their refunds by direct deposit into their bank accounts. During the 2025 tax filing season, the IRS issued more than 93.5 million tax refunds to individual income tax filers, and 93% of those, almost 87 million refunds, were issued through direct deposit. Only 7 percent of individual refund recipients received their refunds by check through the mail.

Next steps:
Executive Order 14247 also applies to payments made to the IRS. Taxpayers should continue to use existing payment options until further notice. Additional guidance and information for filing 2025 taxes will be issued prior to the 2026 filing season.

The IRS will share updated guidance on IRS.gov and through outreach efforts nationwide.

It looks like the Big Beautiful Bill will be signed into law tomorrow. There are several things that will be implemented in 2025 to reduce taxes. These include:

1. Increased standard deductions, especially for seniors.
2. Increased child tax credits.
3. Increased SALT limits.
4. Tax deductions for tips (up to $25K), and for overtime (up to $12500). Special rules regarding professions here. More info to come.
5. Trump 2017 era tax legislation made permanent.

I will be learning more about this new (long awaited) tax legislation in the weeks and months ahead but this is good news for everyone’s pocketbook.
