Similar to fingerprints the vein patterns on wings are highly specific to the individual, even between the left and right wings of the same insect!
Insects wings under microscopes are incredibly complex. They reveal functional structures not just simple membranes covered in hair like setae.
and intricate, bacteria killing, or color producing, nano pillars. They are composed of hardened chitin with veins supplying blood and sensory input. Common features include shingle like scales on butterflies and membranous textures with tiny hairs on wasps or flies.
Butterfly wings are transparent structures made of a protein called chitin, covered in thousands of tiny, colorful scales. As a butterfly gets older, its scales flake and fall off, causing the wings to fade and turn ragged.
