FIRE EXTINGUISHER: YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST SMALL FIRES
Do you know what’s actually inside that ABC fire extinguisher hanging on your wall—and how high it should be mounted?
A portable fire extinguisher is a First Aid Fire Protection Appliance (FAFPA) designed to control or extinguish small, incipient-stage fires before they spread. It is not intended to fight large or rapidly growing fires.
The most common type found in homes, offices, and commercial buildings is the ABC Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher.
🧯 What’s inside?
ABC dry chemical extinguishers typically contain monoammonium phosphate (NH₄H₂PO₄), a yellow powder that works by:
* 🔥 Coating burning materials to help separate the fuel from oxygen.
* ⚛️ Interrupting the chemical chain reaction of combustion.
It is effective on:
* 🟩 Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, cloth, rubber, many plastics)
* 🟥 Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, diesel, paint, solvents)
* 🟦 Class C: Energized electrical equipment
📏 Proper Mounting Height
For easy access and safety:
* ✅ The bottom of the extinguisher should be at least 4 inches above the floor.
* ✅ If the extinguisher weighs 40 lb or less, the top should be no more than 5 ft above the floor.
* ✅ If it weighs 40 lb or more, the top should be no more than 3.5 ft above the floor.
🚨 Remember
A fire extinguisher is only effective if:
* It is the correct type for the fire.
* It is properly maintained and inspected regularly.
* The user knows how to operate it using the PASS technique:
* Pull the pin
* Aim at the base of the fire
* Squeeze the handle
* Sweep from side to side
If the fire is spreading rapidly, producing heavy smoke, or cannot be controlled immediately, evacuate the area, close doors behind you if possible, and call the fire department.
