Dear unnamed Organization,

We loved supporting you over the past few months. Initially, we felt our hearts aligned with your vision and were excited to partner with you. However, we have lost connection with your mission. We haven’t received updates for a while and weren’t sure our donations were reaching you until recently. Unfortunately, we can no longer support your mission at this time. We wish you all the best! Sincerely, Terry and Sue

This letter reflects the pain of neglected donors. No organization needs to risk receiving a message like this. The lack of timely thanks and connection left this couple feeling ignored and unsure their donation was needed.

Timing and having a plan are crucial. Initially, the organization connected well with the donors, but once donations started, they lost touch. No matter the reason, these donors didn’t just ā€œfeelā€ neglected. They WERE neglected. The organization lacked a plan for timely communication and gratitude. As a result, these donors and many others were lost. What a tragic loss!

An action plan with timely responses ensures everyone feels valued, whether they are recipients of your work, field workers, or donors. Each donor and gift is unique, so your thank-you process should be, too. Acknowledge every donation monthly through handwritten notes, emails, or postcards.

Ideally, thank donors within 48 hours, but if that’s not feasible, don’t wait until multiple donations come in to reach out. Acknowledge every gift promptly with a timely, inspiring, personal, and specific message of gratitude.

If you need help creating a plan, you’re in the right place, and we’re here for you. Check our bio for ways to connect, or comment on what you need help with.

Blue Ocean Marketing has been an absolute game changer for ZION clients.

Blue Ocean Marketing has been an absolute game changer for ZION clients.

I grew up in La Jolla, California — a beach town in the San Diego area with the bluest water I’ve ever seen (seriously, La Jolla Cove is ranked in the top 5 of bluest waters in America).

In business, blue oceans represent untapped market space. Most businesses function in red oceans — a saturated market filled with rivals and competition. However, with a blue ocean strategy, businesses can experience limitless growth with little to no competition. We believe great marketing can take your business from the cutthroat red ocean, to a vast blue one — where instead of constantly competing, you are consistently the clear choice.

So, welcome to Blue Ocean Marketing. We specialize in helping ministries, non-profits, and small businesses unlock potential and find success — and we can’t wait to help your business find a blue ocean to thrive in.

You can't always control what direction your organization goes, and you can't control the financial situation of your donor, but you can definitely control whether or not you neglect them.

Did you know that according to the stats, re-engaging your lapsed donors within 18 months of their last gift is critical?!

If you lose them for 2+ years, their chances of returning are slim. 3+ years, and those chances drop to lower than if they had never given in the first place.

Armed with this crucial piece of information, you have work to do, and it's not primarily asking for more money!

Here's the secret sauce, and you'll hear it sung loud and clear here at Zion.

Engaging with your donors isn't about their gifts; it's about them—the people with the vision to serve something bigger than themselves.

Building a relationship is about valuing the things THEY have a vision for. The better they know you, the better they will know if the money they want to give fits your organization.

Your donors are the lifeblood and heroes of what you do. They care about what they are funding, and being able to communicate where their funds are going and thank them properly is like Christmas morning when they understand how much of an impact their gifts are making.

It truly is better to give than to receive; make sure your donors feel that way.
