Why Doesn't the Health Care Industry Embrace Change?
Change requires vision, courage, and integrity. It means putting the needs of our patients ahead of excessive profits and/or personal interests. Is that why we are so change-resistant as an industry?
"Change resistant?" you ask. ABSOLUTELY!
Here were some observations I made nearly 30 years ago. How far have we really come in addressing these issues?
"There has been a glaring lack of visionary leadership in health care. Health care organizations have blinded themselves to the ultimate social and economic repercussions of many of the actions they've undertaken to safeguard reimbursement." -- Leifer Report Spring 1992
"Providers must begin to think in terms of value -- a concept heretofore alien to the health care industry. Value...can be defined as a function of cost-effectiveness, demonstrable efficacy, optimal clinical outcomes, positive patient experiences, and accessibility." -- Leifer Report Spring 1993
"Costs are escalating at an alarming rate, but there seems to be no direct relationship between cost and quality." Leifer Report Fall 1992
It's far past time for real change in health care!
