One of the most fulfilling parts of the work I do is helping a leader pause long enough to recognize how far they've come and what they are now capable of doing.

After a recent conversation reflecting on their progress, a client shared this:

"I can't believe how far we've come since we were first introduced. It was exciting to look back...and reflect on the accomplishments and growth I’ve experienced... I can confidently say that much of this progress is a direct reflection of your guidance, feedback, support, and genuine investment in my growth and development as a leader."

Receiving a message like this means so much to me. Behind those words is a leader who has done the work: examined patterns, considered honest feedback, made intentional changes, and translated insight into action.

We tend to admire the leader who steps in and saves the day. The one who always has the answer. Who takes on the problem no one else can solve. Who works longer than everyone else, carries more responsibility, and somehow keeps everything moving. Sometimes, that's exactly what leadership requires.

But when heroics become the normal way an organization functions, it may be worth asking why.

Sometimes it's a capacity issue. Sometimes we haven't developed the people around us or given them enough ownership.

Sometimes it's a trust or control issues. It feels easier to do it ourselves.

Sometimes, if we're willing to look a little deeper, being needed can become part of how we measure our own value. There can be something deeply affirming about knowing the organization depends on us.

But there is a cost.

The leader becomes exhausted. Others learn to wait rather than take action. Decisions move upward. Ownership shrinks instead of expands. Over time, the organization can become increasingly dependent on the very person who is working so hard to make it successful.

Healthy leadership looks different. It builds clarity. It distributes ownership. It develops judgment and capability in others. It creates systems that continue to work when the leader isn't in the room.

Perhaps one of the more difficult questions we can ask ourselves as a leader is this one:

Am I building something that works because of my leadership, or something that only works because of my presence?

Through my own leadership journey and in my work coaching and developing other leaders, I've come to believe that one of the most influential conversations we have is the one no one else hears.

It's the conversation happening inside us.

The way we speak to ourselves shapes our confidence, our perspectives, and the stories we tell ourselves about what is happening around us, and ultimately how we show up for the people we lead.

Pay attention to that voice. Make sure it's telling the truth. And make sure it's helping you become the leader you want to be.

Every once in a while, a message lands in your inbox that reminds you why you do what you do.

I received one this week from a former coaching client.

She shared the results of her latest performance evaluation and the growth she has seen over the past year. She wrote:

“I wouldn’t be here without you, which is exactly why you were the first person I wanted to tell. Thank you—truly.”

Those words mean more than I can express. But I reminded her of something I believe deeply:

She did this.

Coaching can create space for reflection, challenge assumptions, offer perspective, and help us see what we may miss on our own. But the growth belongs to the person willing to do the work.

She invested in herself. She stayed curious, practiced, paid attention, and kept growing after our coaching engagement ended.

Now she is seeing the return on that investment.

If you’ve wondered whether investing in your growth is worth it, remember that development isn’t only about becoming better at what you do. It’s about expanding your capacity for who you are becoming.

To everyone who has trusted me to walk alongside them: thank you.

Messages like this remind me how much I love this work, and how much I want to keep doing it.

I was truly honored to be asked to serve as the keynote speaker for the United Way of Hamblen County’s 2026 Campaign Kickoff Breakfast.

Hamblen County is where my story began, so having the opportunity to share a message about what it means to be Rich in Community was especially meaningful to me.

What a wonderful morning celebrating this community and the people who continue to care for it!

What a fun morning with the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce Women in Business!

I had the opportunity to bring a conversation about navigating microaggressions through a simple question:

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙠?

We all carry experiences, assumptions, perspectives, and stories with us, and they influence how we see and respond to the people around us. Sometimes, becoming more aware of what we’re carrying is the first step toward seeing one another a little differently.

And then we shifted from reflection to something much sweeter! Lakeside Sweets walked us through a cookie decorating class, which brought plenty of creativity, laughter, and connection to the morning.

Meaningful conversation, good people, and beautifully decorated cookies...not a bad way to spend a morning with Women in Business!
